ABOUT ME

I much prefer the question of "How do you occupy your time here on this earth?" to "What do you do?" I generally ask everyone I meet "How do you like to spend your time?" Later, I might broach what this person does to make money. That's not how I view things, though. Of course, if someone likes to spend time in the pursuit of money, as a goal or due to enjoying work, I want to hear that right away! Most people don't, though, which might be an interesting critique of modern society.*

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

I did donate to the CS Project when I was getting verified :P

Honestly, I've always been a little trepid about couchsurfing, probably because I most enjoy "hosting" (e.g. in terms of hosting parties) and have rarely had a living situating with a spare place to sleep or "cool" roommates.

I'm looking to dip my foot into the waters by surfing, or at least meeting up with other people who have done this before. I love meeting people.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

I hitchhiked to Paris while I was living in Amsterdam. Although my hitchhiking partner turned out to be racist ("That's it! No more Arabs, no more brown people!"), I enjoyed relying on the support of others.

Another experience that comes to mind were traveling the West Coast for the first time ever, on my own, while interviewing at various graduate schools in early 2008. I met interesting hostelers, roomed with grad students, and got to see a lot of

我做过的一件不可思议的事情

I saw fireworks over the Eiffel Tower in Paris on New Year's Eve 2005 and simultaneously got to witness the riot police show up for no reason, thereby instigating a riot. The riot police (who were at that time under pressure from Minister of the Interior, Nicolas Sarkozy) began teargassing a group of young Arabs. It was great social commentary!

I like the idea of showing people a good time in the moment. The best way to do this is by getting the other person to commit to the conversation and elicit their emotions, then truly relating to what they have to say. You have to give someone as much verbal energy as they give you, so ask BIG questions and expect BIG answers. Don't settle for less.
