About Me

Hello! I am an easygoing guy who loves to see new places and meet new people! I've been studying 4 months in Singapore and am now traveling through south east asia and Japan. I enjoy music, good conversation, beautiful nature, watching people, playing the guitar, singing karaoke or just watching people go by on the street. I am very easygoing and up for anything really! Not picky about food or accommodation, just thankful for life!

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

I've never tried couchsurfing before, but I love the concept of sharing and repaying the favor to other travelers. Really, nobody knows the city like you do yourself, right? I know for one that I love my city and want others to see the best of it.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

The semester that just passed was filled with experiences that are just like nothing I've done before: living in a completely new country, traveling to Philippines, Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, Japan and my favorite: Myanmar. Traveling Myanmar with a close friend was the best thing. There is not one face that isn't smiling in that country. Everyone is so hospitable, kind and happy. Exploring mountains, villages, rivers, caves and cities is just a tiny bit of what you can do. The most amazing country.

Teach, Learn, Share

I had a moment of insight at the meditation retreat Dipabhavan in Thailand. I was having my simple but delicious lunch, trying not to think too much, when all of a sudden all the things that I have to look forward to crept up on my emotions like a tiger stalks its prey. It completely caught me off guard and I started smiling uncontrollably and had to keep myself from laughing out loud (we were under a 'noble silence' = no talking).
The sense of expectation, joy and freedom washed over me and I realized how incredibly lucky I am to be in the situation I am. That I was born into who I am with the opportunity to travel the world and do whatever I want. It is such a privilege. It was an incredible feeling that stayed with me.

So I started thinking about who I should thank for all of this. Yes, I have myself to thank for making the best of the settings given me, but without my parents I wouldn't even be alive, and without all my beautiful friends and family that surround me I wouldn't have formed into the person I am today. But they, too, came from somewhere and were shaped by something. The genes in their bodies randomly, naturally selected to decide their starting conditions in life.

This is the work of nature. Of life, the universe, something bigger. I don't know what. I don't believe in a god, but there is no denying that nature makes up everything we are and everything in this universe. It creates all the questions and lies on all the answers, many which we will never know or even think of to ask.
As I pondered this I was looking out from the mountainside of Koh Samui, over the lush green jungle, the ocean fading from turquoise by the shore to dark blue by the horizon; watching all the birds, insects, snakes and squirrels go about their intense lives, listening to the deafening call of the cicadas and the toads, feeling the nature of the island meditate.

Taking all this in, in my head I thanked nature for what it has given me and the joy and happiness that I felt.
And in that very moment, a butterfly flutters up to me, touches (more like crashes into) my forehead and flies away again. Pure coincidence? Possibly. Plausibly. But I like to think of it as nature wanting to say 'You're welcome'.

On Pulau Kapas I had a similar experience which gave birth to a saying, a mantra. A mantra that I've decided to hold on to, and that I really feel applies to my experience and my travels:

Good things happen to good people.
