One Amazing Thing I’ve Done
My 15-Day Hitchhiking Adventure: From Ganja to Kyiv and Back
When I was 18, I threw myself into a wild adventure. With just my backpack, I left Ganja and spent 15 days hitchhiking across three countries — Georgia, Russia, and Ukraine. In total, I covered around 7,000 km.
My first stop was Tbilisi. The Georgian people were incredibly warm and welcoming. Even though they didn’t know me, they were always ready to help, making me feel at home on foreign roads.
Then came Russia. Hitchhiking there isn’t considered very cool, but I was lucky enough to meet a kind couple. They wanted to buy me a gift, but since it was so early in the morning, they couldn’t find anything open. Honestly, their thoughtfulness itself was the gift. Later, a Russian-Ukrainian woman also helped me out, explaining how I could find exactly what I was looking for.
One of the hardest moments happened at the Ukrainian border near Odessa. Because of the war, they didn’t let me cross there. Instead, they told me I could only enter through Kharkiv, which meant I had to detour through Moscow. To make it worse, I missed my first bus there — another delay, but just part of the journey.
My route took me through Rostov-on-Don, Moscow, Kharkiv, and Kyiv. I had planned to reach Lviv, but because of university obligations, I had to cut my trip short and turn back. Meanwhile, since I hadn’t contacted my family for 22 hours, they actually reported me to Interpol as missing! That’s something I’ll never forget.
The journey was full of mixed emotions: excitement, freedom, fear. Sometimes I struggled to exchange Azerbaijani manat, sometimes I had no money and relied on my family to send me funds. Hitchhiking itself was stressful — you never knew what kind of person would stop their car. And yes, sometimes I even had to pay for rides.
But despite all the challenges, those 15 days became one of the most unforgettable experiences of my life. The kindness of strangers, the unexpected twists on the road, and the taste of freedom are still fresh in my memory.
