to constantly learn. and love.
Well. My name is Mara and I like lots of things, which may change depending on my mood and location. I love to hike and bike and generally be outside as much as possible. I love big, hectic cities filled with too many people, but can't deny how happy I am to escape them. I love to travel but always miss home when I do. I love Northwest summers consisting of swimming and blueberry picking. My ideal day is spent outside, walking and talking and eating fresh fruit, topped off by a night of wine drinking with good friends and spastic dancing. I love to learn new things and meet new people and read and write. I sing and hum when I get nervous, stressed or agitated. I'm told that I walk quickly and with purpose. I love chatting and laughing. I believe strongly in many things, and these beliefs guide who I am and what I do.
Wherever you go, there you are.
Why I’m on Couchsurfing
HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING
I have surfed, and met, and would love to host when the situation allows (hopefully soon!)
Biking, hiking, public health, (the overly broad category of) social justice, development, Africa, traveling!, writing, running, the ocean, longlonglong endless walks, adventures, getting lost, baking, theatre, dancing, hip hop, yoga!, jazz!, brilliant books, journalism, family, the dirty south, friends, avocado chocolate brownies, getting lost in my thoughts (to name a few).
Music, Movies, and Books
Oh too many to count! I love jazz and the blues, above all else. "Oh Yoko" by John Lennon is my all time favourite song, closely followed by "Portrait of a Man" by Screamin Jay Hawkins. I love Buddy Guy, Miles Davis, Dave Matthews, Habib Koite, Ali Farka Toure, Taj Mahal, Nina Simone, James Brown, the Roots, the Dirty Projectors, Fat Freddy's Drop, Gil Scott-Heron, Amadou & Miriam, Sam Cooke, and many more. Bill Withers always makes me infinitely happy--the dude is full of positivity and makes any bad mood melt away. Ryzard Kapuchinsky is the most amazing writer. God of Small Things has to be one of my favourite books. Salman Rushdie is the man. Fast Food Nation is my bible. I find Nigerian writers to generally be brilliant and beautiful. I love "LA Story." Secretly, children's movies are my guilty pleasure (but I won't subject you to this unless you agree).
One Amazing Thing I’ve Done
When I was four, I staged a march at my preschool to celebrate Nelson Mandela's release from prison.
