About Me

Hello there hosts and guests!

I'm Mariano, a 28-year-old Argentinian who lives with a dog called "Tutuca" (named after a type of candy similar to popcorn).

I'm also a psychologist and work in the field of food choices (in particular regarding plant-based diets and their potential to mitigate the climate crisis).

I love eating vegan, doing yoga, hiking, participating in environmental organizations and specially travelling, which I try to do often: in the last few years, many Latin American countries and some places in Africa and Asia were my destinations.

I'm really into listening to people and making friends everywhere I go, It surprises me how in the most remote places I end up meeting people who leave a mark on my life forever.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

Although I created my account a long time ago, throughout my life I always chose to stay in hostels when I travelled, or during 2022 (when I travelled by bicycle from the USA to Guatemala) I preferred to stay in my tent.

This year I have the opportunity to go to Helsinki for the WWF´s Eat4Change summit about climate crisis and food systems. I will participate in the summit from the 1st to the 5th of November, and then I will stay a few days in Helsinki until I return to Argentina on the 10th of November.

Through these years I learnt that you get to know places much better when you are with someone from there, and that even hosting someone from outside can help that person to see the place they live in with different eyes. So, when I was looking for a hostel to stay, I thought about giving Couchsurfing a chance and maybe sharing those days with someone local, opening the door to new unforgettable experiences.

Music, Movies, and Books

When it comes to music, I like a wide range of genres, so I'll divide it up: the bands that marked my adolescence (Nirvana, Keane, Queen, Paul McCartney and Charly García) and what I listen to nowadays (Latin artists like El Kuelgue, Duki, Natalia Lafourcade). I also like jazz when I work, and for dancing I like Caribbean rhythms.

My favourite movies are Cinema Paradiso, The Godfather, anything by the Coen brothers, and "Caballos Salvajes", an Argentinian film of the nineties which takes place in Patagonia.

Regarding to books, I was particularly touched by The Art of Loving (Erich Fromm). I also usually read about Buddhist and Stoic philosophy, Psychology of eating, and when it comes to literature I like Cortázar.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

- Traveled from San Diego, California to Guatemala by bicycle.
- The ocean destroyed my tent (I learned to place it further away the next time).
- Met the same person by accident in Mozambique and Paraguay.
- Climbed Acatenango volcano in Guatemala.
- A firefighter let me drive his firetruck in Sonora, México.

What I Can Share with Hosts

I can bring you some alfajores from Argentina (you can google them, they are a type of sweet made with chocolate).

I can teach you how to dance "cuarteto", a typical dance of my region.

We also may have a good time talking about historical and cultural particularities of our countries.

I'd be glad to join you (if you like), in any activity of your daily life, and we could go for a walk to a place you've never visited in your own city.

I'll not say anything about cooking something typical from Argentina because I actually suck at it :)
