Overview
About Me
I'm a 30-year old Slovenian guy who likes to philosophize every so often with my fellow friends about the world and the meaning of it - some wine usually helps. What can I say, I'm just an odd mixture of genuine positivity and melancholy. Beside philosophy, I studied sociology at University of Ljubljana. I am a huge history buff with an amateurish interest in geopolitics and economy. I genuinely like meeting foreigners as I believe that I might learn many indeed useful worldly things in the company of interexchange of cultures. You cannot paint a picture using one colour as you cannot understand or build an enjoyable understanding of the world via knowing just a few individuals all in similar shades, different colour painting happens when you go away from the certainty of every day life and expose yourself to uncertainties (whilst traveling abroad). Traveling is who we are in our purest form which got lost recently due to sedentary lives many of us live on regular basis. I don't think it's a coincidence we enjoy ourselves deeply when going around unknown places, we after all do derive from hunter scavengers that loved to explore. Back to the thrill of unknown I say.
I think there is some magic in discovering yourself while put in the most harsh environment, when the survival instinct kicks in - for me personally I feel most alive when I have to challenge myself by going into the great unknown. So in a sense a transformation of yourself into something by exploring your own desires and fears.
Philosophy:
"I have come to believe that the whole world is an enigma, a harmless enigma that is made terrible by our own mad attempt to interpret it as though it had an underlying truth."
- Umberto Eco
“Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well-preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming, 'Wow! What a Ride!'"
- Hunter S. Thompson
"Thought
Men fear thought as they fear nothing else on earth – more than ruin, more even than death. Thought is subversive and revolutionary, destructive and terrible; thought is merciless to privilege, established institutions, and comfortable habits; thought is anarchic and lawless, indifferent to authority, careless of the well-tried wisdom of the ages. Thought looks into the pit of hell and is not afraid. It sees man, a feeble speck, surrounded by unfathomable depths of silence; yet it bears itself proudly, as unmoved as if it were lord of the universe. Thought is great and swift and free, the light of the world, and the chief glory of man.“
- Bertrand Russell
Greatness from humble beginnings.
Why I’m on Couchsurfing
My wish would be to meet people whom I can share my interests with and if possible retain some of you whom I meet as friends. I'm also open for learning new languages.
Interests
They vary, but in general I like to run, I enjoy writing; I do some poetry every so often when I'm inspired, and if possible sometime in the near future I'd like to write a book or two of my own. Topic of it is yet to be decided. Besides running and writing I like to read books. I love travelling and at times some wine to lift the mood.
Music, Movies, and Books
Favourite music types would be: jazz, soul, rock n roll and classical music. But in general I tend to add a various mixture of other songs to what I listen at the time.
Movies: How to Train Your Dragon, Up, Midnight in Paris, Guardians of the Galaxy, Dead Poets Society, Fight Club, Her, Mr. Nobody, Rush, Grave of the Fireflies (and many more obviously).
Books: Beat Generation books with Jack Kerouac at the helm of it.
My favourite philosophers would be Epictetus, Erich Fromm, Emil Cioran, Friedrich Nietzsche and Albert Camus.
One Amazing Thing I’ve Done
In May 2015 I finished my first marathon completing Leiden marathon in the Netherlands.
Teach, Learn, Share
I can teach you goofiness, learn what it is to meet a guy from a peculiarly small country and share my oddities with you.
What I Can Share with Hosts
Good company and I am always up for exploring the city together. Might also teach you a certain word of Slovenian along the way and prepare some dishes.
