Last year (in 2015) I traveled during 8 months around South America. I visited Argentina, Chile, Uruguay, Bolivia, Peru, Brasil and Mexico (which is not in South America), and in all of these countries I met travelers and hosts from couchsurfing website. They told me a lot about their own country, city and culture and I have to say that I enjoyed the cities that I visited staying a couple of nights with them more than cities where I stayed in hostels. I felt more like a local, going out for a drink in a bar that is not necessarily advised in a book.
I stayed 6 months in France thinking about my future destination, I hesitated between going back to South America or going to another part of the world and I finally chose New Zealand. I think I'm gonna love its numerous different landscapes. Can't wait :)
