PHILOSOPHY

For me, success is not how much you gain, but how much you give. I believe we all have an important role to play on this earth. We all need each other in all our differences. That's why I feel so strongly about advocating for GLBTQI rights and multiculturalism. When I teach, I try to encourage all my students to find their passion in life as simply the thing that gets them out of bed each morning and then doing what is needed to keep that going. Sometimes it means doing things you don't always like so much, but in the long run it makes you happiest and contributes most to the world around you.

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

We can't host all the time, but it is fun to meet new people and share what we can once in a while. Eugene has a lot to offer and we're happy to help more people discover it.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

We had a renter who introduced us to couch surfing and hosted in the room below hers. When I was in my 20s, we didn't have cell phones. I would just drive into town (L.A.) and start calling everyone I knew from a pay phone until I found a couch or carpet I could crash on. Sometimes I ended up sleeping in the bucket seat of my compact car. I'm glad there are more organized ways of doing it these days.

兴趣

We like hiking, seeing beautiful nature sites, board games and games that make you laugh. We have a trampoline in the backyard. Beth gardens and bicycles. Dirk runs. Marty (me) builds and fixes things around the house. The kids are into chess, video games, Magic the Gathering, D & D and boffing.

We have a small DVD collection viewable in the guest room. It includes things like The Princess Bride, The Lord of the Rings, and Whale Rider.

I used to build movie sets and I got to work on the set of Stargate in the great sand dunes of Yuma, Arizona. I've been in quicksand, tornadoes, earthquakes and I was once struck by lightning.

I know some American Sign Language and I want to learn more Spanish. If you need help with math, I'm your guy. I'm great with Excel and most of the basic computer programs.
