I just moved back to the US after being in Guatemala for about a year and a half working with an NGO. I miss it horribly and want to figure out a way to get back to Latin America in the near future. In the meantime I am living, workin and preppin for grad school.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

My fave experience in a while was being in a shrine to the black Jesus of Esquipulas in a rural Mayan town in Guatemala. It was in like a closet at my friends house. Her host grandma, who is a Mayan shaman lady, was playing guitar (singing dirty songs in part Mam, part Spanish) and passing around cigarettes and cheap rum to everyone (there were a lot of people in this closet.) Eventually we realized after rocking Amazing Grace that in the circumstances singing "Chocolate Jesus" would not actually be irreverent-- so we did.
