Overview
About Me
These 'About Me' things always through me into an existential crisis, but I'll do my best. . . I'm a 24 year old Melburnian travelling Europe for five months with my friend, Greg. I finished my degree in philosophy at Monash University last year. It's not going to make me happy, nor will it get me a job, but at least I'll be the smartest pizza delivery boy in Melbourne. I'd consider myself friendly and agreeable, and I enjoy good conversation and healthy debate. Back home I spend most of my time reading and listening to music. I still don't know what I want to do with my life, but I'm hoping that travelling will help me overcome some of my listlessness.
Why I’m on Couchsurfing
I'd like to try Couchsurfing because I enjoy getting to know people on a one-on-one or small group basis. Hostels have so far provided excellent opportunities to connect with different people, but I like the prospect of getting to know locals a bit better and finding out interesting things about their cities from their own perspective.
Music, Movies, and Books
I read widely but my main interests have always been literature and philosophy. J.M. Coetzee, Aldous Huxley, Soren Kierkegaard, John Ashbery and Brian Friel are among my favourite writers.
At the moment I'm going through a voracious Krautrock (the likes of Amon DüüI II, Popol Vuh and Can) and Japanese psychadelic (Fushitsusha, Far East Family Band, LSD March, Les Rallizes Denudes, etc) phase. I also love Jazz, especially free-form stuff, and many different kinds of electronic music, including ambient and drone.
As for movies, I enjoy almost anything directed by Ken Russell, Andre Tarkovsky, Lars Von Trier, Charlie Chaplin, Richard Linklater and Quentin Tarantino. With a group of good-humoured friends, even bad movies can be fun though. I also enjoy the occasional shitty horror movie binge with my sister.
One Amazing Thing I’ve Done
I'm not sure if I've done anything particularly 'amazing', but I'm sure if I suffixed the word with an 'ly' - thereby making it an adverb - and added another adjective, I could relate a few stories that are in some sense amazing. For example, I made the amazingly stupid decision to drunkenly ride a London bike through one of those fountains that spurt water from the ground. I came off the bike and sprained my arm very badly, then spent the rest of the night walking to my hostel, only to find reception shut at about 2am. I ended up finding a nice patch of grass to sleep on in St. James's Park. It was the greatest night of my life.
What I Can Share with Hosts
I've accumulated a bunch of great stories from my trip so far. Other than I think I'm a fairly easy-going person who can adapt to any sort of personality. I like to try and return other peoples' hospitality towards me, so if we meet up, dinner and drinks are always on the cards, provided I don't become too poor to get home!
