I enjoy stories - written sure, but especially told. It's how we get to know the world.

Currently, I'm traveling in the western US, in support of my partner, who is working in Moab, UT. I have temporary work in Salt Lake City starting in April, but until then I'm planning on delving deeper into the obvious beauty of the West.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

Learning of a place through those who live there every day is the best way. I came to appreciate couch surfing while living in Detroit, as my next door neighbor hosted couchsurfers routinely. At the time, I was working in an ER with irregular shifts, meaning that I could help show some of his couchsurfers around the city on mornings or days off.

So, I have a good understanding of the spirit of hosting, which prompted me to use couchsurfing when traveling. I couchsurfed and WWOOF'd in 2016, but haven't had significant time off since then to do either. Until now!

Music, Movies, and Books

Thomas Pynchon, Toni Morrison and Murakami have dominated my recent reading. Anything that tries to synthesize surreality and practicality together can keep me interested. Being from Michigan, I also have a soft spot for Jim Harrison. He describes humans living within nature in a similar way to Wendell Berry, and my perspective has been informed by theirs.

I enjoy most music, but have been listening to mainly psych rock/guitar music while driving out west: Deerhunter, Thee Oh Sees, Khruangbin, Stereolab, the Grateful Dead. That being said, live music in any form wins out over Spotify. I will gladly dance depending on the setting.

Teach, Learn, Share

I have a solid foundation of meals that I'd be happy to cook for a host. A recent specialty is banana-cornmeal griddle cakes, which go great with the Michigan maple syrup I've been lugging around.
