关于我
CURRENT MISSION
I'm looking for a temporary place in SLC where I can help out and be in touch with the actual community, even if that means just a few locals.
ABOUT ME
I'm a chameleon, been all around, have lots of stories, but also like to listen. I can fit into almost any kind of group or situation which is generally a blessing. I find myself in a funny situation at the moment. I have a job (carpenter) starting on October 7th at the VA Hospital in Salt Lake City. It's a permanent position, however, it may not be because the same position just opened up in Ann Arbor, where I already have a home, a wife and two school age boys. I would like to have the job in Ann Arbor, but if it doesn't work out, that's fine too. Until I find out, which will take into mid-November, I don't want to put my house on the market, sign a lease or uproot my family. So the deal is, I'd like to find a place to stay where I feel connected to the community in some way. Not paying rent would be nice, since you know, wife and kids, but totally up for paying my share of whatever (food, etc.). The upshot for you would be that I can do almost anything with a house. I won't have much for tools except some basic hand tools, but if you do, I can get some big or small projects done for you (very good at what I do, especially finish carpentry, but I'm pretty good at anything, really. I even enjoy and do a great job of painting), or clean, do yard work or take care of pets. If you are interested in having a live in caretaker for a few days, a week, a few weeks, or even a whole month, I would love to help out. I'm also really interested in getting to know people, the area, and have a little fun while I'm there since I may be staying long-term anyway. I arrive 3:15 on Saturday the 5th. First thing is to find a bike to get around, and probably should get a phone, but not a big fan of tech. I might be hitting up the hostel in the Avenues district for the first night or two, and either this thing works out or I rent a room out. I'd rather see if this could work out. I come in peace.

This IS the spiritual experience!

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING
Right now I'm just trying to get my feet wet in SLC. Once I settle down in one place or the other, I look forward to hosting. Traveling is something I'm getting tired of putting off, these days the best I can muster on my budget is a working vacation. Which is fine, I like to work, and I can't really experience a place unless I live there for a few months.
COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE
I learned about couchsurfing this summer when I actually hosted a veteran couchsurfer after meeting him for only five minutes. He was there to visit Isle Royale National Park where I was working as a seasonal carpenter. He met a friend of mine on the boat over, and was asking me to help him with his itinerary. Since it's a big place and hard to get around without a lot of money or time, I invited him to hang with us (swim, fish hike, drink, bbq, camp, forage). He was great to have with us, and I loved his energy and stories about couchsurfing in Europe. If it weren't for him, we probably wouldn't have done 1/4 of what we did that weekend. I can't seem to find him on here just yet, but he would be my first reference. En, you out there? Remember the Rock!

音乐、电影和书籍
Comedy: George Carlin, Louis CK, Sarah Silverman, Flight of the Conchords. Kevin Smith and Wes Anderson movies. Documentaries. Fantastic Mr. Fox might be my favorite movie of all time.
Music: The Black Keys, Foo Fighters, Avett Brothers, Andrew Bird, A Perfect Circle, Grandaddy, Neil Young, Bob Dylan, Fleet Foxes, Rage Against the Machine, Pearl Jam, Elliott Smith...just to name a few. I am always up for something different though.
Just read "Origins" on the geology of the earth and plate tectonics and its influence on the evolution of life. Loved "In the Age of Mankind", "Sailing Alone Around the World" "Better Off" and anything by Alan Watts (especially his lectures). Eric Sloane, who writes books on the architecture of barns. Audubon reference books. I'm a big fan of identifying bugs.
我做过的一件不可思议的事情
Climbed one of the great pyramids of Giza (illegally) in broad daylight. It was 1993, it was an innocent time.
Was present for the birth of both my sons. Crazy, just crazy to witness.
