COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

It wasn't through the Couchsurfing website, but the first time we crashed at a random stranger's house was in Barcelona 2001. It was a public holiday and every bed in the entire city was booked out. It was the middle of the night and a couple of strangers befriended us and took us on a terrifying journey through dark back streets to their home. Luckily it turned out they didn't want to kill us and we had an awesome night's sleep on the floor of their tiny apartment. It restored my faith in humanity.
Later I discovered couchsurfing meant you could plan ahead to crash at a random stranger's place. We did so a couple of times in Canada in 2006, including with Yan in Quebec, which was awesome.
