About Me

I ride my bike a lot. When I'm in a new city I just want to walk. I hate buying maps. I'm terrible with orientation, but sometimes find my way back with the help of graffiti and architecture. I like to ask people for directions.

In my work I try to translate the most complex things into almost nothing. It's a silly and beautiful way to get a grasp on the world.

PHILOSOPHY

"If you have an apple and I have an apple and we exchange apples, then you and I will still each have one apple. But if you have an idea and I have one idea and we exchange these ideas, then each of us will have two ideas."
by George Bernard Shaw

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

I don't mind people using couchsurfing to have free accommodation. Basically it's like this: if you need a free place, you're more than welcome, but it would be nice if we have things in common. If we get along, we can go for a coffee, and if I have the time, I can show you around the city, whatever feels right.

I have lived in Amsterdam for quite some years now, so I now some good places to go. But if you are here for a short time, and want some time on your own to figure out the city, that's good as well.

I don't have a strict idea on what couchsurfing should be.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

I have hosted and surfed a few times now and think the concept of couchsurfing is quite brilliant. It makes you rethink the whole concept of living, the way you use your home. I don't spend too much time at home, and love the fact that with the people staying at my place my house gets a new function, it makes it more alive also. And it's nice to hear how people experience your city.

My surf experiences have been good most of the time. Sometimes there is someone that has different expectations. I found that some hosts really take the hosting seriously and want to give you guided tours each day, even if you don't have too much in common. This can get a little akward, but most times it's been great and I really feel like I have made new friends across the globe.

Music, Movies, and Books

My favourite childhood movie is defenitely The Dark Crystal. I still love to see it.

My favourite movie now is Taxi Driver. Travis Bickle is my hero. I love the scene where he goes into the office where Betsy works and asks her out on a date.

The movie that I saw the most: 2001 - A space Oddysey.

Music: Jacques Brel singing Ne me quitte pas, James Brown doing his performace with Please Please Please. Jimmy Hendrix playing at Woodstock.

Flying Lotus, Fela Kuti, Kraftwerk are in my top list...

I can never finish books,
but I always start new ones. Read a lot of philosophy books that I didn't understand, but it's great to read them over and over again and understand a little bit more every time. I love the stories of Plato and the language Wittgenstein invented.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Driving over the Nullabor Plains with a friend. You drive, but nothing changes, the horzion is still and left and right you have the same view. This gives you a tremendous feeling.

Teach, Learn, Share

I can share stories of my travels. I would like to learn a new recipe.
