Sobre mí

CURRENT MISSION

Explore, explore, explore. World, people, self. And avoid dogmatic missions.

ABOUT ME

I am a guy ultimately fairly confused about life, but one thing has become certain for me: I want to explore the world, and meet many new and interesting people. I want to make life an adventure.

In a more conventional sense, I am a 22 year old living and working in Minneapolis. I love my bicycle, and use it year-round to get where I am going. (Within the city, that is...) I would like to think I am very open to new attitudes, perspectives, and beliefs, and I am looking to give this a try and expand my world.

I am easy-going, my desk has frighteningly large piles of crap on it. I like making music-I can play some decent harmonica, and enjoy making some synth-pop with my friend Sam.

I like searching for (and finding) the beautiful things in life, especially in unexpected places.

PHILOSOPHY

Randall Munroe frighteningly well summarized my philosophical debacle as of late in his XKCD comic:
The infinite possibilities each day holds should stagger the mind. The sheer number of experiences I could have is uncountable, breathtaking, and I'm sitting here refreshing my inbox. We live trapped in loops, reliving a few days over and over, and we envision only a handful of paths laid out ahead of us. We see the same things each day, we respond the same way, we think the same thoughts, each day a slight variation on the last, every moment smoothly following the gentle curves of societal norms. We act like if we just get through today, tomorrow our dreams will come back to us.

And no, I don't have all the answers. I dont know how to jolt myself into seeing what each moment could become. But I do know one thing: the solution doesn't involve watering down my every little idea and creative impulse for the sake of someday easing my fit into a mold. It doesn't involve tempering my life to better fit someone's expectations. It doesn't involve constantly holding back for fear of shaking things up.

This is very important, so I want to say it as clearly as I can:
FUCK. THAT. SHIT.
And furthermore, perhaps an extended mission on what I intend to do to stave off the routine that I fear has taken too much of my life:
Take wrong turns. Talk to strangers. Open unmarked doors. And if you see a group of people in a field, go find out what they're doing. Do things without always knowing how they'll turn out.

You're curious and smart and bored, and all you see is the choice between working hard and slacking off. There are so many adventures that you miss because you're waiting to think of a plan. To find them, look for tiny interesting choices. And remember that you're always making up the future as you go.

This recently all hit me pretty hard, and I'm looking to take action.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

I've couchsurfed in Chicago and Istanbul, and it has been a rousing success both times. Now I'm looking for more, on both sides of the couch.

Intereses

I love learning about pretty much anything. I will spend hours on Wikipedia at a time.
I love bikes, and I ride them everywhere. I'm pretty down with computers. Mac is the system of choice, but I'm a flexible dude. Technology in general, though.
I have a crack interest in philosophy, which is to say, I have done very little formal reading in it (except political philosophy) but have a good interest in it. Would love to talk about it.
I love cats. I'm down with dogs, too.

Música, películas y libros

Movies: High Fidelity, Gegen die Wand, Dr. Strangelove, Baraka, The Royal Tenenbaums, and The Triplets of Belleville, to name a few.

Music: Last.fm profile
Quite open and always expanding, but to date has consisted of quite a large amount of electronica (e.g. Röyksopp, Orbital, DJ Shadow, and Fujiya & Miyagi), some indie rock (e.g. Wilco, Arcade Fire, Peter Bjorn and John), and random bits from many other places, like jazz and hip-hop (hooray for Minneapolis hip-hop, like Atmosphere, Heiruspecs, and Brother Ali)

School has a monopoly over much of my reading lately. Thoreau's Walden has really impacted me.

Algo increíble que he hecho

Hitchhiking through the Transylvanian mountains in a giant semi-truck, with two gracious pilots who didn't speak a word of English

Enseña, aprende, comparte

I could pass on some blues harmonica skills. I know how to make a web site. I can perform basic maintenance and repairs on a bicycle.

I really want to learn to play the piano.
