Couchsurfing is good opportunity to make new relationships, travel, and meet with natives. Hotel room is comfortable but you will never find atmosphere of locals in there.
BTW: Good relations between people from different nations are very important for releasing tensions between nations. If you know somebody from another country and you have a good relation with him you are not going to throw atomic bomb to the place where one lives.
