Because it offers the great experience of meeting people in a completely informal environment, get to know places not by using the tourist guide but by "borrowing" the personal experiences of the locals. And also, what is even better, getting to visit cool places in the city that only the chosen ones know about :)

Hard to put in a list but still the ones that come into mind:
"To kill a mockingbird"(the book but also the movie), "The Man Who laughs", "In Cold Blood" and everything I can think of Gabriel Garcia Marques.
Movies.. "The Shawshank Redemption" , "Fight Club", "Pulp Fiction", "Forest Gump", "Se7en", "Memento", "The Truman Show" and lots of lots of others.
Music: all kind starting from the soft sound of Yann Tiersen, Jose Gonzalez, Beirut, Radiohead and going in different directions like Pearl Jam, The White Stripes, Sixto Rodriguez, The Rolling Stones and many others.
