One Amazing Thing I’ve Done
My family and I took in 2 elderly neighbors that had no family in 1998. I grew up with them they were like a second mother & father to me. The state was going to place them both in a nursing home, they thought he could not care for his wife because of her dementia and hypertensin, etc. They thought they were at risk. Go figure, so had to help and moved them in with us. He past away Sept. 9 2001 and she ended up living 6 more years with us. Total care for her, it is true we revert back to being babies sometimes. She was wheel chaired bound, had to be fed and changing diapers. It was amazing how our family all pulled together to give her the best care in the world. We also took in my Aunt in 2002 because she had no where to go after being hospitalized for colon cancer. She stayed with us and cared for her till fer passing in 2004. Then in 2011 we took in my cousin who was diagnosed with lung cancer that had spread throughout his body. He was never married and had no where to go so here we go again and took him in. They thought he would have 9 months but as I have seem this to many times I knew it would not be long and he passed away 7 weeks later. Caring for the 4 of them has been the most rewarding experience for our entire family. Update 2016: My Mom was diagnosed with a brain tumor, when released from the hospital she moved in with us, we cared for her with the amazing help of Hospice for the 5th time till her passing 6 months later. Update Oct 2017: Here we go again, my mother-in-law calls and asks we to come to SC to care for her, arrive Sept. 15th, get Hospice set up for her and we tough it out. We had the pleasure of giving her three and a half weeks of around the clock TLC. Mom passed away on Oct 9th.
