Indie rock, remote places, taking photographs, movies, senses of humor, swimming in the sea, animals, editing video, walking, dumb pop cultural references, social justice, indie pop, hiking in wilderness areas, live bands, not eating meat, road trips on isolated back roads, green left politics, generally hanging around bodies of water, did I mention indie music?!

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

Having turned 40 last year - I suddenly realised despite my best efforts, I'm not getting any younger!! I've seen quite a bit of my own country but only ventured overseas once before - that was for a month long road trip in California - so it was more than time to get out amongst it again. I'm about to undertake a similar jaunt through Europe and the UK - this time for 3 months and hopefully will meet plenty of CouchSurfers along the way.

Music and movies are great sources of joy! Old and new school indie: The Wedding Present, Mogwai, Electrelane, Sebadoh, Teenage Fanclub, The Drones, Pavement, Mclusky, The National, Galaxie 500, Archers Of Loaf, Dinosaur Jr, Eric's Trip, The Go-Betweens, The Jesus & Mary Chain, Nick Cave, Tilly and the Wall, Radio Dept. etc. etc. etc. Also much 70's hard rock and punk, and a good helping of alt country...

Many, many movies: The Year My Voice Broke, My Life As A Dog, Children of Men, Bicycle Thieves, Mad Max, Noise, The Boys, Local Hero etc.etc. The works of Hitchcock, Goddard, Bergman, Ken Loach, Woody Allen, Michael Winterbottom, Paul Thomas Anderson, The Coen Brothers, Charlie Kauffman, Hal Hartley...

Great TV: Nathan Barley, The Thick Of It, Alan Partridge, Larry David, Six Feet Under, The Sopranos, Deadwood etc.

Aussie authors Andrew McGahan, Peter Temple and Shane Maloney have been recent faves.

Winter's dawn at Cradle Mountain in Tasmania - walking on untouched snow with not a soul around - pristine and magical. Witnessing the final red rays of the setting sun slowly ascend over Half Dome at Yosemite - awe inspiring. See photos as evidence!
