ABOUT ME

Historically, we have been parents, step-parents, grandparents, foster parents, and even great grandparents. Recently, my husband and I downsized our household, gave the children what they wanted out of our "stuff" and sold most of the rest. We now live permanently in a hotel suite. Chris still has his job, and I do some odd jobs now and then, but that's about all for which we are responsible. I have had a hand in raising kids since I was 19, and I'm 64 now and retired. I am ready to have some time for my own interests--drawing, painting, activism, spirituality, friends.

I am compassionate, honest, creative and friendly--but I flunked knitting in Girl Scouts and never returned. :) I am extremely intelligent, but cannot tell right from left very well. I enjoy meeting people, being my own regular self in public (without causing a scene), and using argument as a method of learning. I do not like a lot of complaints, negativity, false fronts, and mean people. (Since I am so-o-o-o nice! :) I was and am a child of the sixties, valuing Love and Peace, but I do not participate in free for all sex orgies or drugs (You can be glad for that. LOL) My husband is quiet, cerebral and enjoys puns. He plays keyboard in a rock band.

PHILOSOPHY

Can good prevail over evil? Are there such things as good and evil? It's not my job to figure it out. I just want to do my part by trying to be nurturing, accepting, positive, and helpful. By believing and respecting that all life contains Light. And I want to live long and prosper. You will have to ask Chris what his philosophy is when you get here.

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

Here is where I need to say that I have not participated since last August when we stayed in Charlottesville with some wonderful hostesses. Shortly after that, we lost our place and happy home at Staybridge Manor. We had little time to prepare and checked in at a Ramada through Christmas, then rented an apartment. My husband was scheduled to be transferred to TX to work in Feb of 2016. More bad luck, his place of employment was burned down by an arsonist a few weeks ago. Now we have to be in Texas by July 1. I am sorry about all the messages I never answered. We were lucky to have our own bed, much less anything extra. Well, this is it till we get settled, then we'll start having people in again.

What started out as a way to get to an out-of-town wedding may end up as a new way of life. Though my grandchildren often take up the couch., we still do some hosting. ( Chris says that he has had our home child-proofed several times, yet the kids just keep getting in somehow.)We have surfed twice so far.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

Our experience has been terrifically enjoyable. So great to learn about the lives of others without watching reality tv! (But we do watch them anyway)

I enjoy local newspapers, NPR, big band or ethnic music, novels, arts, crafts, and children. I am interested in social activism; the future of capitalism, socialism and corporatism; earth-based spirituality; the evolution of man. Currently I am working on a drawing of some leaves, painting ceramics. I babysit my G. grandchildren sometimes, and enjoy playing with them. I am learning to play Cribbage, enjoy Scrabble, and playing word games online. I am watching 20-20 on TV about the life of the Queen of England. Last time, we watched a show about E. Hemingway and his wife, a war journalist. But I also watch shows with the kids, anything from Sesame Street to Storage Wars! Lots of Disney Channel. I like Louis Lamour westerns and 19th Century reformist literature and just about anything in between. Chris likes current, suspenseful action dramas.P.S.--I love to SHOP and I hate our consumeristic attitudes--go figure. Chris and I both like desserts, computer games, TV, road trips,the internet, crosswords. He enjoys electronic gadgets.

I enjoy 19th century classic lit because I am interested in understanding the beginnings of capitalism, socialism, etc as seen through the eyes of popular authors. I like light fare sometimes--adventure with a heartwarming feel. I like that in movies, too. John Wayne. His version of True Grit. And the classics--African Queen, Casablanca, Jane Eyre, Wuthering Heights, etc. Water World, just because it's campy and corny. South Pacific and other musicals. Spaghetti Westerns. Music? Again, old stuff--big band, early fifties, bluegrass, ethnic, R&B. Throw in a bagpipe. I like making a connection with the musician/singer. My husband is more mainstream. Any movie with lots of shooting and screaming so he can stay awake. Not too many books. Older rock bands with good keyboard--he plays the keyboard.

I've seen Niagara Falls, which may be pretty tame to some folks, but I was awe-stricken. Same with flying over the Rocky Mountains, seeing the actual works of Rembrandt and Van Gogh. I heard my sister earn the approbation of a crapload of people by belting out "New York, New York" in a piano bar on a cruise ship. I viewed the marine life of a reef via snorkeling. I have sat in Quakers' Meeting, quiet and still and been transported by the energy. I've seen Elton John perform. I finally married a man who has proved to be a "keeper". Held newborns (3 great grandchildren), watched children achieve understanding, listened to the hearts of men and women. Chris has held the same 3 newborns, watched the same kids that achieved also become menaces i.e. Dennis. He's traversed our country, been to India.

I am a lot like F Gump in that I have lived so many lives into just this one life. Lots of experiences, funny and sad stories. I know about tolerance, patience and foster kids. I have listened to old folks and can retell their experiences, too--World War II, the 20's, the 30's. Arts, crafts, literature, history...trivia. Chris likes to be secure and sticks to his job (was laid off several times). He's been there the better part of 36 years. But just when you think you have him pegged, he comes up with a surprise curve ball. Expect to enjoy him.

An earful. Ha-ha! Yes, I love to talk, need to practice Listening. Fun. Having fun as in laughing, talking, Listening, playing cards or board games. Just the company. And we can clean up after ourselves.
