Exchanges are the best thing I know, because you meet so many different people and it's just such a good experience and I was out traveling with a project for a year and we stayed with host families the whole trip and we visited 8 different countries and I learnt so much! It completely change your way of looking at the world and it makes you a stronger person. I love traveling by staying with local families because you get to see the inside of the culture and not just scratch the surface of the place you're visiting.
