Algo increíble que he hecho

last fall i decided to go kayaking in the everglades of central florida on a whim. i had never been in a kayak before but it was appealing at some kind of theoretical level (i know, weird). so i signed up for a five mile solo kayak ride. the thing is, the brochure did say there would be wildlife, including alligators, but for some reason it didn't really sink in. so fifty feet into the river i see my first alligator swimming along the bank, the first of many that day, and i was absolutely terrified.

but i made myself continue. it was probably the longest five miles i have ever crossed, and i think i aged five years in the process. it was amazing -- when you're alone and confronted by a very real, very visceral danger near you that is out of your control, you really become an animal yourself in a way - vigilant and all senses. i don't know if i'll ever do that alone again, but it definitely changed my life.

and the most amazing thing i've seen built by humans - the alhambra. it's got the kind of beauty that would make you weep.
