About Me

Currently taking a break from working as an eye doctor to explore the world. My wife (https://www.couchsurfing.com/people/judy-earls) and I are taking several months to do an around-the-world trip to experience places and cultures completely different from our own.
I love finding out how things work. Love to take things apart and find out how they are made (it’s putting them back together that's the problem). I love science and learning about the world around me. I never want to stop learning, so many cool things going on that I would hate to miss. I am very curious about everything going on around me and try to be critical thinker. I am not afraid to re-evaluate my opinions and beliefs because I want to be improving myself constantly.
I really enjoy being active. I would rather spend my days outside when possible. I really like hiking, trail running, and camping.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

I really want to get a more intimate, local experience when I travel. The best times I have had are when I get to sit down across from someone from a completely different background and find out about their world and their way of viewing it. I want to find more of that when I travel. I also want to be a cultural ambassador for my country, both while traveling and when hosting some day.

Interests

Running, hiking, tubing, swimming, cycling, anything outdoors really. Love to try new foods and beers. I really like learning about how other people live and experience the world.

Music, Movies, and Books

I read and listen to audiobooks a lot. I am a big fantasy and sci-fi nerd. Ender's Game, The Golden Compass series, The Martian, and Seveneves are some all-time favorite books. Born A Crime from Trevor Noah was really eye opening for such a different perspective on things.
The webcomic XKCD is a must read for the science/math minded.
I don’t watch much TV but I am a science nerd so anything on Discovery channel is a win. The Martian is probably my favorite movie right now.
I listen to about anything but hard rap and country. Even those sometimes I will make an exception for. I don't listen to all that much music anymore, typically I'm listening to podcasts and audiobooks.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

I have grown a lot over the years and that is completely due to the people in my life. Spending a summer taking care of a friend spiraling into a mental illness and having a friend spend a summer homeless will really change the way you look at the world. I really owe who I am today to the people I have had in my life.
