About Me

CURRENT MISSION

To savour a Southern hemisphere summer!

ABOUT ME

NOT IN MELBOURNE! ONLY APPLY IF YOU WANT A COUCH IN HOBART!

I am a student who just made the move from Melbourne to Hobart. I love my adopted state, it has beauty, good people and exciting things going on. I am currently studying at the University of Tasmania doing an arts science double degree.

Last year I travelled for five months through North America and a bit of Europe. I spent most of my time on the west coast of America travelling north from Vancouver to Anchorage and spending time on Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands. I also crossed the continent and spent time in Jasper, Toronto, Montreal and New York. I then went to Iceland (which is awesome), England and Spain.

I grew up by the water and love to swim, surf and snorkel. I am a big (if not a super fit) hiker and love to look at the nature around me. I am involved in climate action and environmental activism. Whoo!

PHILOSOPHY

Impact and non impact.
I must admit I find the future frightening. Like many people I listen to the news and watch the world and worry about the future of humanity and the planet. I worry that we will such the oil out of the ground before we know what to replace it with, I worry about systems changing, storms and floods. I worry that as a young person I might be the last generation to see hundreds of species that we will have wiped out. I am also worried by a heightened hate angst and greed in the world! So, I am scared! But not hopeless! When you look at history there were many times where hate and greed seemed to rule, in the words of Joni Mitchell ‘Hiroshima cannot be pardoned’. But! In-between the times of hate and fear there has been enough peace and prosperity to build a civilisation like this! So we can repair our ways, it is just a matter of shift, shifting our minds and shifting our way of life.
I try to act with this in mind to create a better world. I want to impact on others as others have impacted on me. This is why I try and always be kind and open. I try and listen to people, both people a agree with and those I don’t. I try and make friendships with all sorts and love as many people as I can. I try to never blame or hate and spread that anger. I also try and appreciate beauty, which greatly adds to my own happiness.
My other philosophy is non impact. I try and move through the world impacting the environment as little as possible. This reflected in many of my choices. For instance, I don’t drive or eat meat. Though I know that I am as inconsistent as the next person, for instance how much oil have burned on planes! But I try. For this reason I am involved with the environmental movement. I used to work for Greenpeace and when at home I volunteer for them. I am a science, politics and philosophy student and I hope to set those skills into helping our society shifts into a more sustainable one. Whether that will be as a scientist, politian or activist time can only tell.
I think it is important to travel and share personal philosophies from our respective corners of the globe. Travel also makes one wonder! An important thing to do. I love to talk, learn and debate with people. Especially people with different views as I can find I can get lost in my own ethics and I like to be challenged and brought to account!

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

I am yet to participate much in CS, though I have been to some CS meet ups in Melbourne and Montréal and stayed on two couches so far. That was a really positive experience and I am excited to get more involved, both while traveling and at home. I am ready to start hosting.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

I am yet to have too much couch surfing experience. I have stayed on peoples couches and had many people on mine. But I have never organised it though the website. I have been to a few meetings of CS though and know many couch surfers! They have all got me very excited to surf myself!

Music, Movies, and Books

I am of the Harry Potter generation!
I do read outside of that though, I always have two books on the go, one on audio and another on paper. So I have read a bit.

Teach, Learn, Share

I can cook! And teach that.
Other than that I can offer up my thoughts. Whatever they may be. I would love to learn from what peoples passions are.
In our house we are learning to Garden, we can teach you the little we know or maybe you couold teach us. We are also learning to juggle.
Teach me!
