To my mind, it's one of the best options to meet new people from other countries and to feel the atmosphere of the city/country in it's original way. The locals can introduce you to a real everyday life, which is impossible to reach being as a tourist in a hotel.

Uma Coisa Incrível que Eu Fiz

Once me and my best friend were totally lost in Bretagne, France. There was no transport, no hotels/hostels, no people we knew - only a large "La forêt de Brocéliande". After some time, hitch-hiking helped us to meet a nice man with his little daughter who warmly hosted us, cooked some food and the next day showed us really amazing places of Bretagne, we've visited a flea market with them and rode horses. Thus, great people are everywhere if you are adventurous enough :)
