About Me

CURRENT MISSION

To learn and to find fun problems to solve

ABOUT ME

I have been a giant physics geek for most of my life. If I'm enjoying a beer with my friends the topic always seems to turn to that of science and the mysteries the universe still holds for us. This interest has lead me to spend the last 6 years working at CERN and Fermilab (two of the biggest physics labs in the world) searching for the unknown. Now though, it's time to come back home to the US as start a new career in the tech world in San Francisco.

Interests

My main pastime these days is playing strategy board games. These are things like Settlers of Catan or carcassonne, though my favorites at the moment are Twilight Struggle (a cold war simulation), Power Grid (you operate a power company), and Eclipse (space exploration).

Other interests involve nearly anything outdoors. Hiking, camping, swimming, rock climbing, and anything new that looks engaging.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

The unveiling of the Higgs results at CERN was a fantastic moment. There were well over a thousand physicists waiting in line overnight for a spot in the main room, all of use buzzing with excitement. Every one of us with our laptops and phones out, posting on twitter, chatting, and waiting. The event culminated with both ATLAS and CMS claiming to have seen the Higgs boson, wrapping up two very crazy years of work. The rest of the day we all walked around on cloud nine, excited like we've never been.

Another great moment was my first trip to the top of one of the Swiss Alps. Not a particularly high one (only 3000m or so), but we still went up over a glacier and had ropes and axes. We had lunch at the top and watched a thunderstorm rapidly approaching Mont Blanc before we scrambled down. The views were fantastic and coupled with the exertion going up left endorphines buzzing through my system the rest of the day.

Teach, Learn, Share

I love talking about science. Specifically particle physics. If you want to know about the Higgs, how CERN works, or what that new result you read in the news means, just ask.
