About Me

CURRENT MISSION

Learning, creating, eating delicious food

ABOUT ME

Hi! I'm Nicole Ezell, currently a student at Reed College in Portland, Oregon who's originally from Austin, TX. I love food and animals and hope to maintain a sense of curiosity and adventure through the arduous process of being a physics major. I'm a pretty quiet person, but I'm tidy and will totally bake delicious treats or cook a meal for you!

I'm a 5.10 climber with decent backpacking and caving experience, too.

PHILOSOPHY

I believe that we as humans are small, compared to the Earth itself and compared to the global population. In turn, the Earth is tiny compared to the galaxy and the magnificence of the universe around it - we get one small lifetime to enjoy, so we might as well enjoy it while making a positive effect on the environment we live in and the people we live with.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

I plan on having a surfing couch when I acquire a home; dorm life has no spare room, unfortunately. :( But! I will exchange tasty treats for a place to stay.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

None so far!

Interests

Oh man too many things
Dogs, cats, snakes, rock climbing, caving, photography, art, gardening, sustainable farming, fermentation, knitting, the lost art of the craft, physics, computer science, mathematics, baking, cooking, buddhism, travel, etc. Pretty much any nifty thing, except for playing music. I have no musical ability whatsoever, although I love listening to it!

Music, Movies, and Books

My favorite directors are Hayao Miyazaki, Quentin Tarantino and the Coen Brothers. I love Murakami novels and I'm really enjoying my ancient Greek literature class, although I wish I had a better ability to get off of reddit and read. I like hipster music - M83, good dubstep, Wu-tang Clan, Modest Mouse, etc. Oh, and Yo-Yo Ma's Cello Suites.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

I rappelled down an 180-ft pit in the Tennessee/Alabama/Georgia tri-state area, that was cool. My most useful experience was backpacking for three weeks in the Wyoming Wind River Range with a NOLS course. While not my favorite experience due to some strange group dynamics, being away from civilization and just the sheer population density of any city was amazing. I returned to Lander, mystified that I could exchange printed paper for valuable, delicious food.

Teach, Learn, Share

I know how to cook relatively well, and I know various tidbits of technical rope work for caving and climbing, and rescue skills in those areas.

I'm very interested in things that could be considered "lost crafts," like cheese-making, yarn dyeing or textile weaving, etc. Especially things that pertain to local, sustainable practices, and I'd love to learn anything in that area.
