Once upon a time, I was a traveler with ultimate freedom—hitchhiking, backpacking, bicycle touring, hopping on trains with nothing but a vague destination and a spirit of adventure. Then life threw me a delightful curveball: my partner started working in the airline industry, and we had kids. Suddenly, my once unpredictable, nomadic lifestyle turned into booking flights and staying in hotels. Don’t get me wrong—hotels are great, and airplanes are basically magic—but I started missing the raw, unfiltered joy of flexible travel and meeting new people in unexpected places.

These days, I still sneak in a few solo adventures each year (because winter camping in the mountains doesn’t require accommodations—just a sturdy tent and questionable life choices). A few competitions and short trips land me in hotels now and then, but when I stumbled upon Couchsurfing, I had a realization: maybe I could reclaim a bit of that flexibility and spontaneity, even in my new phase of life!
