CURRENT MISSION

I am currently traveling to Antarctica to work a 6 week job for January and February. Afterward will be traveling New Zealand, Australia and maybe Singapore and Hawaii. Hope to make new friends along the way!

ABOUT ME

I live in a tiny town in the mountains just north of Yellowstone National Park that is a perfect outdoor playground. I love to spend time rafting on the nearby Yellowstone River, cross country skiing in the backcountry, sea kayaking on the flat water, cooking in my kitchen, and spending time doing these things with my friends. I am happy doing most things outdoors as a jack of most sports but expert of only a few. To try and stay outside I work in remote medical and wilderness emergency medicine. I love rescue work.
I enjoy music and cooking. I am readily persuaded with dark chocolate, dark beer, and/or dark coffee and the establishments these are found in. I love traveling and exploring new places. Love to go to hot springs when I can.

PHILOSOPHY

Go places! Do things! I may not accomplish all the things I dream to do in life, but I want to look back some day and know I sure gave it one heck of a try.

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

By being a friendly and helpful hosts, and to be kind and appreciative guests to those who share their homes when I'm traveling. Even if I can't host, I always try to help guide those passing through the area to find the resources they need and help them have a great time on their journey. I have always appreciated those who have helped in along in my journeys, and want to do the same for others.

I love books, and can spend hours in a library or bookstore looking at all sorts of types of books. I have worked as a volunteer librarian and worked at book stores, so I have browsed a lot of books. Currently I am reading books about Antarctic history.
I am not an avid movie watcher, and prefer to pick a movie (usual on recommendation) rather than just watch whatever is on. I love stumbling onto a good fantasy/sci-fi, cult classic, documentary or indy film - something that makes me think - as well as a little lighthearted fun too. Some titles: Lord of the Rings, Snatch, Monty Python movies/skits, Blade Runner, Akira, Pirates of the Caribbean, Battlestar Galactica, Firefly, Aliens, Pulp Fiction, Rain Man.
I love almost all genres of music, and what I'm listening to largely depends on my mood. This can range from old country to gypsy jazz and klezmer, to trance/ambient, lounge, to punk and Indy. I do have a thing for progressive rock/metal and Scandinavian metal. I love music that blends genres, especially tradition music on non-traditional music (e.g. pirate punk rock).

By trade I know emergency medicine and rescue, and I enjoy teaching it. I am working as a paramedic and PA on wildland fires this summer and look forward to this new twist on my 15 years of EMS and firefighting work. I would also like to improve my mountaineering skills. I am an aspiring skier (all kinds, but mostly backcountry touring) but stick to easy terrain for now. I have surfed, and would like to get better, but hard to do in a landlocked state. I attended a massage school in Thailand, as well as a cooking school there, and would love to travel with a theme of cooking and eating fabulous food. I want to learn about sustainable living and alternative energy such as wind and solar. I want to understand the mysteries of electricity. I want to learn how to weld. I would like to learn carpentry. I have always wanted to get my pilots license. It'd be awesome to new a tall ship and learn about sailing. I need to really learn how to dance (swing, slow, waltz, etc) and not just struggle through. I like to grow things I can eat, and I love cooking. I'm new to hunting, and want to learn how to butcher and process my own game. Yep, you're getting the idea.... I want to learn about everything!

I am an easy going person who needs very little while traveling, so much so that I really just need 6' of flat to roll out my sleeping bag on. I am generally a neat and tidy person.My one shortcoming when it comes to couchsurfing is that I am allergic to cats. I enjoy cooking and would love to share your kitchen with you to make fantastic eats. I also like to share stories of travel and learn from each others experiences.
Socially I prefer to enjoy a tasty meal and drink at home or a local pub or eatery with a small group of friends, or going out for an activity like a hike or to check out the local sights instead of going out to the crowds and clubs. It's fun to meet new people when traveling, but I am also very comfortable going it alone and finding my own way.
