About Me

ABOUT ME

Ever since I was a child, growing up in the rural parts of north Sweden, one of my greatest joys and passions in life has been learning things. Since money was often tight, I was already making my own candies, pastries and similar products as a six year old (and I still do). Figuring out how to make the most out of what we had also helped me develop strong math and problem solving skills and much of my education came to focus on sciences and theories of learning and knowledge, several of my favourite writers were classical philosophers.

After a few years in college (2004-2008) I finally made the decision to spread my wings and leave Sweden for a yearlong stay in South America. During that time I ran into the woman who would later become my wife. These days I live with her in Wilmington North Carolina where I have had to find new ways to make a living (as the state of NC does not recognize my Swedish credentials as local teaching certification).

PHILOSOPHY

As a teacher of philosophy I could probably write several chapters, if not volumes on this. For the sake of readers I will try to keep it to the very broadest of basics:

I have a strained relationship to money and the accumulation of private property. I rather spend my time and money explorer new places or matters of mind and soul than invest it in acquiring stuff and wealth. I enjoy discussing almost any topic as long as the conversations is held in a respectful manner and I tend to find more pleasure in listening to someone with ideas and opinions that differ from my own than what I get from simple affirmation.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I GOT STARTED

When I was staying in Buenos Aires (2008-2009) I found myself temporary out of housing. I was lucky and quickly got to know the local couchsurfing community through events and by recommendation from friends who where already active.

I loved the community in Buenos Aires and the spirit of sharing your home with travelers from all over the world made the global couchsurfing community something I really wanted to be a part of!

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

Currently able to host people for a night or two in Wilmington, where I live with my wife, Hyun (also on couchsurfing).

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

Mainly surfing in different parts of South America. Also hosted people when I've had a place and opportunity to do so, though these opportunities have been somewhat limited and since both me and Hyun have been members for a long time, a lot of my experience of hosting has been shared with her.

Interests

Everything (almost). Life in general, particularily how it and the stuff that makes it works and operates. (Almost) all forms of human expression (art, popculture, music, literature etc) except for violence and overly violent contests and sports

  • beauty
  • ethics
  • cooking
  • baking
  • politics
  • traveling
  • painting
  • surfing
  • nursing
  • philosophy
  • mountains

Music, Movies, and Books

I'm interested in whatever makes me feel something, which is a whole lot.

Music ranges from Bach to R.A.T.M. passing through pretty much everything other than metal and bad electronic (I have a hard time really enjoying drum & bass etc.)

A few of my favorite internationally renowned fiction authors would be Kafka and Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman. I also do read a lot of philosophy and non-fiction.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

One of the most amazing things I've seen would be a pack of wild wolves with a couple of arctic foxes playing just a few hundred feet away from them. I saw them from a reassuring distance using binoculars and lit by moonlight (there isn't really any sun during the winters of the north).

Co-piloting a stunt plane and a helicopter over the frozen north was also pretty awesome.

I've also had a number of fantastic experiences travelling, but rather than listing them all here, I will save them for in-person sharing.

Teach, Learn, Share

I am a bit of a "jack of all trades" though, so I'd reckon there's a lot of stuff I could teach some basics of.

People tell me I'm an excellent cook and baker.

If you've read everything above, you might have an idea of other things I may be able to offer.

What I Can Share with Hosts

Stories, ideas and theories about the nature of all things small and large.

Also food. Vegan, vegetarian or other dishes. I've tried to learn from the cuisines of all countries I've lived in and most of the ones I've visited. I've also worked in restaurants serving food from Mexico and south east Asia and tried to learn a few tricks from my Korean family members.

Countries I’ve Visited

Bolivia, Colombia, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Finland, France, Greece, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Tunisia, Turkey, United Kingdom, Uruguay

Countries I’ve Lived In

Argentina, Peru, Sweden, United States
