About Me

CURRENT MISSION

My current mission is to finish my PhD and then get out to see the world beyond the computer screen and student poverty lifestyle, I'm thinking coral beaches, great diving and laidback evenings.

ABOUT ME

I'm as tall as a six-foot tree, been a vego for years but the furries aren't and I don't mind if you do as well. I've moved around a bit and have been everything from a punk to hippy. Having fun is serious business that I'm working on!

PHILOSOPHY

When I was 18 my philosophy was: 'try everything, twice'. I still do. I think we should live a kinder life on Earth because we don't have two planets to try twice, we have to get it right this time and now. I don't think poor people are bad folk because they're poor and rich people are good because they're rich. I think George Bush is the worst thing to happen to America and the world and that the next alien spaceship taking humans for experiments should take him! Though he's probably one of them...

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

Can't say that I've had any yet - but I have WWOOFed, which was great fun, weeding a lawn on a resort island in the Whitsundays for a couple of hours then spending the day diving, bliss!

Interests

Apart from my PhD work (how many times can I mention this in a single profile?) I'm involved in a weekly hour-long radio program about independent music, marine science and conservation. This is 2-3 pm every Monday, listen in on: www.edgeradio.org.au/listen
I'm a big fan of the Tip Shop and try and go rock-climbing, sea kayaking and walking whenever I can. I'm into environmental issues, mainly on the political side and I've given talks about the anti-environmental movement the most recent being a couple of weeks ago, you can see the review at: www.active.org.au/hobart As well I used to consider myself as something of a photographer, well I got paid, but now I just look at images in art galleries.

Music, Movies, and Books

Do papers from the 'Journal of Experimental Marine Biology and Ecology' and 'Marine Policy' count?
I'm finished reading a Lemony Snickett book 'The Wide Window' as well as a a Bill Bryson book, re-read the Harry Potter books (you can tell I'm avoiding my PhD) and have zipped through a book of short fiction of different types. I was impressed by 'The Shipping News' was blown away by 'The Life of Pi' and I'm very happily engaged with 'Death of a Riverguide', after a rather intense read in 'Us and Them: Anti-elitism in Australia'. I'm hanging to see the latest Star Wars and I've just been given the CD comp of the last Byron Bay music festival. I missed out on the Falls Festival but I did get to Meredith.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

It always hard to decide what is the most amazing thing in a life apart from still being alive. How do you choose the most amazing meal, the most amazing movie, the most amazing bushwalk, the most amazing animal, the most amazing diving, the most amazing sleep, the most amazing sunset... the list goes on. But if I had to choose some that are right up there are: spending a month in Antarctica hunting the whalers with the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society; bushwalking down Hinchinbrook Island when the rivers were in flood; watching puppies being born; and seeing 'Star Wars' as a kid.
