I’m friendly, thoughtful, and prefer slow walks to fast tours. I usually take care of my own lodging but I like to meet up with couch surfers because I am more of a people person than a tourist person. The memories I value most from a trip are memories of the people I get to know and the stories we get to exchange. I tend to vibe best with people who are empathetic, curious, and who love to laugh. Not a drinker (have never been able to develop a taste for it), in case that matters to you.

I'm on an open-ended trip right now, doing some personal writing and tending to business remotely. Back home I’m involved in a lot of different things. My favorite project is my work on a non-profit venture focused on combatting social isolation (and rehabbing a 115-year-old "small-town-main-street storefront" to turn into a hangout spot). I’m a bit of a storyteller but I’ve also held a “listening” role for decades, so I’m a patient and curious listener as well.

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

I don't get many requests (due to being so far from the airport and from Dallas) and I'm away from home a lot, so mostly I use couchsurfing to meet up with locals on long trips in unfamiliar places.

Interests

I find people more interesting than places or activities so tell me your story and I’m happy. (And if you don’t have a story to tell, you can show me your favorite TikToks). I am curious about, and interested in, too many different things to list. Like, I’m borderline obsessed with the ways AI is changing the world and what it means for society (and the human race). I enjoy goofy conversations in VRChat with strangers in anime skins but I’m also deeply interested in finance and options markets, the insanity of politics , and increasingly scary world events. I’m always interested in learning something new!

On the activity side, apart from socializing and conversation, I am interested in low impact activities that build fitness (hiking, gym, yoga…). I am in something of a recovery mode so my intensity and stamina are on the low side currently but I’m working on it!

Music, Movies, and Books

Mystery, sci-fi, historical fiction, and an endless stack of nonfiction on psychology, culture, and whatever future we’re heading toward.

Music: pretty eclectic, but I don’t listen to enough music because there’s always an audiobook on queue on my phone. I need to change that.

Movies: anything with a compelling story and extra points for heroism in its various forms.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

I couldn’t afford a safari outfitter or guide, so I took my son on a self-guided safari through South Africa, driving a Ford Focus from the Johannesburg airport. Stayed in rest camps for around $65 a night, and honestly, I don’t think we missed a thing.

What I Can Share with Hosts

I know a little about a lot - enough to be a decent sounding board for people figuring things out.

I’ve spent years studying personality patterns (MBTI and beyond), and I enjoy helping people understand how different types tend to think, connect, or clash - just out of curiosity, not as therapy.

Also happy to share what I know about things like options trading, real estate, or creative side projects - it's the kind of stuff that’s more interesting to me than it sounds, but it's not really party talk lol.
