About Me

CURRENT MISSION

Satisfaction

ABOUT ME

I live and work in Laos as a journalist for the Xinhua News Agency's Bureau in the capital, Vientiane.

I get to research all sorts of fun and interesting topics about Laos and the region FOR MONEY which is why I love my job. That and, occasionally, I get paid to travel.

In my free time I'm usually unwinding at home or in town with a beer.

PHILOSOPHY

Atheist, will respect anything based on logic and sound reasoning.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

I can no longer host people in my present house. Sorry!
I am still up for hangsies outsies and various other forms of social engagements.

I've got a pretty good knowledge of the sites of Vientiane (and an even better knowledge of the bars). My working week is pretty light these days, so I am often free to meet new visitors (esp. weekday afternoons and weekends).

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

Hosting surfers during my time in Vientiane.
It's been great so far.

The best couchsurfers I've ever had have taught me just as much as I've shown them.

Interests

In no particular order:

A Great conversation!
One where I learn something new :)

News!
I am a complete news junky. Kind of suits the job....

Travelling!
Of course... Can't get enough of it. Though I'm very happy in Vientiane at the moment, the next destination will likely be China (AGAIN) and Mongolia, but that's a long way off.

History!
I trawl through many history books/docos. It's all so fascinating!

Other cultures!
It's what makes travel great. Well that and the other travelers, and wild parties, and bizarre experiences...

Music, Movies, and Books

Music!
Many genres, many artists. I'm not writing them all down, you'll have to ask.

Movies & Docos!
Docos, any subject. As long as it's not something by History channel, Ancient Aliens and all it's kind are so awful as to be kind of funny.
Movies, all sorts. But especially anything quirky and off-beat.

Books!
I am an avid reader, a lot of non-fiction recently: politics, history & SE Asia.
But love good fiction: Borges, Vonnegut, Marques, Murakami, much much more.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Massive lightning without rain, a regular and beautiful occurance in Laos

Teach, Learn, Share

Yes please.

I can cook some pretty passable Laos, Thai and Cambodian dishes, but nothing amazing. I speak intermediate Lao, and basic Mandarin. I have a reasonably good insight into Lao culture.

Countries I’ve Visited

France, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Malaysia, New Zealand, Singapore, Spain, Thailand, Viet Nam

Countries I’ve Lived In

Australia, China, Laos, United Kingdom
