Overview
About Me
My name is Obie Fernandez and I'm an electronic music producer (trance and progressive) and sometimes touring DJ originally from the New York City area. I've lived in a few different parts of the world, most recently Mexico City. In my previous career (which I am semi-retired from), I was a well-known software developer and published author, plus I've also started a number of successful companies including one very large one based in Nigeria called Andela. My public persona is easy to research via Google, so I won't say anything else about that. Feel free to research me.
On a personal level: I am in my mid-40s and have been married twice. Lots of world travel due to work. Super chill positive vibes and easy to get along. I have two older kids that I adore. They both live and study engineering at Georgia Tech in the USA. I love music and art. I'm not necessarily the life of the party, but I'm the guy who made the party happen. As I have aged and achieved more financial security I have been orienting my life so that I can pursue creative challenges every day. I write and work on music every day. I regularly do 16/8 fasting, so I have basically two meals during the day. Often vegetarian, sometimes even more extreme like fruitarian.
Why I’m on Couchsurfing
As of January 2019 I have found myself with a lot of freedom from responsibility (for the first time in my whole adult life!) I decided to do some extended traveling and delve deep into my meditation practice, while enjoying being much much closer to nature and quiet peaceful parts of the world. I'm looking forward to new deep friendships with fellow open-minded people.

Music, Movies, and Books
I love all sorts of music as long as it's well-produced and soulful.
Neal Stephenson is my favorite author, by a large margin. I also read a lot of non-fiction books, ranging from history and biographies, to pop-sci and self-improvement stuff. I'm a published author myself, having written technology and business books.
One Amazing Thing I’ve Done
I was the founding CTO of a company called Andela, which has raised in excess of 400 million dollars from the likes of Mark Zuckerburg, Al Gore and Serena Williams, and is well on its way to training 100 thousands software engineers across Africa.
Teach, Learn, Share
These days I'm very focused on my music career and am happy to share all I know about how to grow an electronic music career from scratch. I know a lot about technology and software engineering also, and still serve as part-time CTO for various startups.
What I Can Share with Hosts
I'm an extroverted guy. Happy to share knowledge and deep conversations.
