By meeting new people you broaden your mind and get new interesting ideas, some of which can influence your whole life!
I usually don’t prepare for my trips too thoroughly, and try to improvise during them, listen to the advices of people whom I meet or just find an interesting place on a map and making my way to that point.

I also hitchhiked through the whole Russia (from Moscow to Vladivostok)
