I find it great to look at the country from the different angle, it's like looking from the backstage how the play is done. When you stay with locals, you can learn unique and true information about the country, see places hidden from foreigners' eyes and get awesome experience: getting to know other culture from the inside is great)

Movies: Captain fantastic, Sing street, Submarine, The boat that rocked, Almost famous, 500 days of Summer, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, One day, The Perks of being a Wallflower, Her, It's Kind of a funny story, Hunger games.

Books: To kill a Mockingbird, the Stranger (Camus), All Bradbury stories and novels, also like Salinger, Fitzgerald, Bulgakov.
