I want to discover the place I'm visiting.

No offense to people who like to book guided tours, but I feel that using that way to visit a foreign land makes you miss on things. I will easily find museums, architectural wonders or the new hip cocktail bar in a travel guide. I might not, however, find that beautiful waterfall up the trail, that hidden beach, that tiny jem of a restaurant where you can eat the most delightful meals cooked by Anna, that greek lady who treats all of her customers like her own children.

It is mainly why I want to stay with locals who, if they should feel so inclined, will guide me through memorable experiences.
