ABOUT ME

Hayley: I recently finished my master's at Wright State University, in Dayton, Ohio, USA, where I also taught Academic Writing. In my free time, I write creative nonfiction, which is the genre I specialize and publish in. Besides writing, music is my passion, as I'm a classically-trained singer. Professionally, I recently started working in Amsterdam for Laureate Online Education, the online partner of the University of Liverpool, where I am the Manager of the Centre for Student Success. It's a challenging role, but I'm happy to be standing up for students. I have a wandering spirit, and I feel lucky to have so many incredible people in my life.

Maurice: I've always loved to travel, and have seen almost all of Europe, spent 3 months on the Trans-Mongolia Express exploring Asia, traveled Mexico, and visited Canada and the US (during which I met Hayley in Montreal). I'm a traveler at heart, and love meeting and talking to other travelers.

PHILOSOPHY

Hayley: I live for the moment. I truly believe that the most precious commodity we have is time, and I want to live every second of mine to the fullest. I wear my heart on my sleeve, and try to always go with my intuition. I am an optimist, and tend to see the best in people. I live for love, and for adventure, and I believe that the only thing we are left with at the end of our days are the memories we've made- I'm ready to go out and make some great ones.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

Hayley: I took a road trip through northern OH, PA, NY, New England and Eastern Canada, using CS to find places to stay along the way. I loved it, and I'm itching to have another similar trip and do more surfing.

Maurice: I've never Couchsurfed, but after hearing all Hayley's great stories about it, would love to give it a try.

Hayley: Music is my life, as I'm a classically-trained singer. I love everything from opera to metal, Bob Marley to Joni Mitchell, Johnny Cash to Billie Holiday. Movie-wise, I love comic book movies (I'm a pretty big nerd)- Batman Begins, Iron Man, The Crow, etc- chick flicks- Under the Tuscan Sun, Love Actually, Bridget Jones' Diary- indie movies- Elizabethtown, Juno, Pirate Radio, etc- classics- Gone With the Wind, Breakfast at Tiffany's, Sabrina, etc... Books? I have a Master's in English Lit, so I love literature in general, but I'm especially into American poetry right now- everything from Whitman to Ginsberg, Dickinson to William Carlos Williams.

Maurice is a huge film buff (both classic and contemporary) and would talk movies all day if he could. He's also an avid reader, which you can tell by the bookcase in our living room.

Hayley: When I went to Reynosa, Mexico, on a church mission trip. I was one of the only people who spoke Spanish, so I did a lot of translating- I was the person who the villagers talked to, and trusted- I loved that, and I will never forget that experience.

Playing guitar on the street, for the first time ever, in Quebec City. I don`t speak much French, and a French-speaking man came up to me and gave me change- I thanked him, and he left. About 15 minutes later, he came back- he had bought me dinner. It was absolutely incredible. :-)

Hayley: I'm a musician, writer, and poet, and I love to cook. I'm always willing to share these gifts, to anyone who's willing to join in. I also love people, listening to their stories, and passing on what I know. Life is a learning experience.
