Teach, Learn, Share

The City of Hong Kong. The first time I went here was with my father and mother when I was 10 years old. It was a business trip for my father, a shopping spree for mother (it was also her B-day) and a prize for my getting second honors at grade school.I fell in love at once with this beautiful city. We went to Tiger Balm Gardens,(its not there anymore last time I checked),rode the Star Ferry, ate aboard the Jumbo Floating Restaurant, had a roasted peking duck dinner with a show ( a Filipino band was playing) at the Ambassador Hotel somewhere in TST. We were driven around by my father's business partners in a Rolls Royce Bentley and we were given the Royal treatment then. Oh, those were the days, indeed.

One of the best memories of Hong Kong during my first visit there is the genuine honesty of its people. At the eve of our departure from HKG we had a wonderful dinner show courtesy of the Bardahl people and Count de Bedin. In the morning the expensive watch that I borrowed from my father was missing.I couldnt remember where I left it probably because I was still euphoric about last night and my mother was getting hysterical, then I remembered. I took it off washing my hands at our hotel. I rushed to the head waiter of the Imperial Hotel and told him my predicament. He told me to describe the watch and then he said "Is it this one?" "Yes that's the one", I told him and thanked him profusely. That event left an indelible mark on me about these people's honesty.

By the way, as a postscript,a few months after, that same watch was snatched from my mother ( she was wearing it),as she stood by our car watching our driver fix a flat, in Malibay, Pasay City.(They used to snatch watches and handbags, now they go for cellphones and iPads.

I've made some very good friends there and we still keep in touch.
