I went to paris I had expected to be searched going in to museums and galleries but was surprised that there was a bag search every time I went in to my local supemarket.

The more I attempted to speak French, the more people were willing to converse in English.

There was a heavy troop presence. I didn't feel intimidated or worried about it (more reassured, actually), but I'm not used to seeing soldiers in RER stations and pedestrian subways.

Dullness. Despite being sunny out, some places were quite poorly lit inside. Verailles and I could hardly see some of the 17th centurt Dutch paintings in the Louvre.
