About Me

CURRENT MISSION

To interact with people beyond the mainstream

ABOUT ME

My husband and I travel together most of the time, and virtually never leave our labrador retriever behind. we like doing 'eclectic' things. We enjoy outdoor activities, especially hiking and walking. We do some geocaching, but more for an excuse to find a cool new place. I am a graduate student studying wildlife biology, love to garden and provide as much of our own food as I can. Our house and life is always barely controlled chaos, but life is for living, not for being a slave to our house. but we have a ton of fun seeing new places and doing things. I'm always up for a good concert or music festival. We're pretty earthy people, but not granola-crunchy. Hate the way this site doesn't always let me know people are trying to contact me...so email if want at pamohearn@gmail.com

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

we love to interact with new people, and introduce people to our little town and the beautiful surroundings. We don't get to couch surf ourselves very much, as we do most of our travels with our two yellow labs, but we are happy to open our home to people, have great, interesting conversations, and forge new friendships

Interests

Our favorite thing is to go on random wanderings. road trips are our forte. I spend a lot of time in school and doing research, which has helped to expand my curiosity about new places and new things. I love birdwatching, hiking and camping. We live in a rural area that provides great outdoor opportunities, but we were both raised closer to an urban environment, so we often feel like we are being cut off from the real world and need to go spend a weekend or so in a city. I love live music, and we will make multiple trips for concerts and festivals, as none happens within hundreds of miles of us. When home, I tend a large garden, raise my own meat and egg chickens, and try to preserve as much of our own food as possible. I also am an avid swimmer, swim-team coach and lifeguard in our town. I participate in occasional open water swims, more for fun than for competition. At home, we have packgoats that we used for hiking, but they are enjoying a cushy retirement now, as well as hosting a friends geriatric llamas.

Music, Movies, and Books

we are both pretty varied in what we read, listen to and watch, but in general country music is forbidden in our house.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

I was fortunate to be able to spend a semester of college doing field research in Costa Rica. on one occasion we were looking for amphibians and reptiles in the leaf litter of a rain forest. I found a tiny leathery egg under a leaf, about the size of a jelly belly jelly bean. I picked it up and held it in my loosely closed hand until I could get to somebody who knew more than me. As I crawled over to him, I felt it pop. I was horrified I had squished it. I opened my hand and a tiny 1-inch long lizard had hatched in my hand.
I worked for Idaho Department of Fish and Game for a number of years. I used prison work crews to help me accomplish some of the larger manual labor jobs. these were felon crews of 10 each. nearly every day we went out, I would find trash and shot up bottles left by others, and would go into a rant. One day, the crew beat me to the location, found a pile, cleaned the entire thing up, and managed to find a partial address off a torn letter that they gave me so I could pursue it further. it was really sweet.

What I Can Share with Hosts

we have a house in the hills outside a small town that we really like. Enjoy time enjoying the scenery, going for hikes, eating great homegrown food. If we can, we'll take you to the hot pools in town.
