About Me

CURRENT MISSION

Confounding professionalism

ABOUT ME

Was once an open-eyed, cynical eccentric brimming with wander lust. Now playing the role of reluctant, semi-delusional med student turned psychiatry resident no longer with too much time on his hands. Any suggestions on how to turn the library into your opium would be greatly appreciated...

who am I kidding; I always have too much time on my hands and I've never been one for libraries...

content on living and dreaming; all comes together in the end; might as well enjoy the ride....now if only I could find some time off

Back now from a completely nomadic year and happy to be connected to a single city for more than a month at a time now.

PHILOSOPHY

don't get me started on the prophetic nature of smiling dogs

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

hosting, surfing, participating in and occasionally leading Madison CS events.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

Haved lived vicariously throughout much of medical school by hosting a tremendous group of cats throughout my days. Since then, I've been meeting when I'm traveling to new places for away rotations. No need for a couch, but no better way to be introduced to a new local. Have since been surfing my way through a number of interviews and loving every bit of it. The stories that come from my experiences vs those of my hotel staying brethren are incredible and even make for great conversation starters at the interviews (just in case anyone else in interested)

turned my generally stressful residency interview season into a month long road trip with an old middle school friend couchsurfing the entire way. Couldn't have asked for better hosts for the two of us during the interviews and certainly wouldn't have gotten to know the cities as well without the gracious CS hosts

Interests

Things that don't make sense at first glance, irony, false prophets, messy creations, warm eyes, grocery shopping with a basket rather than a shopping cart, bright and intricately textured cuisine, cherry blossoms, Rye bread, streets not bordered by parking lots, exploring new cities/areas with only a bottle(s) of wine as a guide, afterhours ridiculous dance parties, scissor kicks, windsurfing, shennanigans, large amounts of foam/bubbles, smiling at dogs, films that make you go what the fuck, chasing frisbees, uber-themed events, bulbous glasses of lusty red wine, jovial/true-to-form festivals, sponteous overnight forays into unexpected locals, "karaoeking" hard enough to ellicit mild hernias, hula hoops, fast cars, dan fogelberg music...

Music, Movies, and Books

I've been a big Genesis fan ever since the release of their 1980 album, Duke. Before that, I really didn't understand any of their work. Too artsy, too intellectual. It was on Duke where Phil Collins' presence became more apparent. I think Invisible Touch was the group's undisputed masterpiece. It's an epic meditation on intangibility. At the same time, it deepens and enriches the meaning of the preceding three albums. Listen to the brilliant ensemble playing of Banks, Collins and Rutherford. You can practically hear every nuance of every instrument. In terms of lyrical craftsmanship, the sheer songwriting, this album hits a new peak of professionalism. Take the lyrics to Land of Confusion. In this song, Phil Collins addresses the problems of abusive political authority. In Too Deep is the most moving pop song of the 1980s, about monogamy and commitment. The song is extremely uplifting. Their lyrics are as positive and affirmative as anything I've heard in rock. Phil Collins' solo career seems to be more commercial and therefore more satisfying, in a narrower way. Especially songs like In the Air Tonight and Against All Odds. But I also think Phil Collins works best within the confines of the group, than as a solo artist, and I stress the word artist. This is Sussudio, a great, great song, a personal favorite.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

I have a particularly epic tale involving a giant tuna steak, my first attempt at seafood while vegetarian, and a 7-11. Not for this particular forum (does not allow for the dancing demonstration).... please bring up if we ever meet in person though. It has actually be recreated by friends for a film course
