One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

It was in India ... December 1997. I had sympathized with chandrikar (an oil company executive) who was staying in the same hotel as me in Agra. Living in Bangalore, he was due to return home after 6 months in Agra. We said goodbye to each other the day before our joint departure (I was leaving for Jaipur). The day after my arrival in Jaïpur, I go to the station to buy a ticket for Udaïpur (next step). 40 counters ... 40 queues ... India ... over a billion people ...
As I wait patiently, I peek into the next line and… Chandrikar is there. The Bangalore train line had been cut and had been diverted to Jaipur ... so it was in the company of this sympathetic character that I visited Jaipur, a city where he had never been and, provided with my Lonely Planet, I visited Jaïpur, a city where he had never been. I was his tour guide for that day.
