About Me

Hello!

My name is Phoenix. I'm from New York state and I've lived in Brooklyn for the last seven years. I'm a visual artist (painter), performance artist (dancer, choreographer), screenwriter, yogi and traveler. I'm looking to stay in Melbourne for a few months (and who knows, maybe even longer!). I'm looking to meet some new friends and fellow creatives, perhaps in the art world or film industry for networking opportunities or just because we're usually pretty cool people. I love to collaborate; I have experience in film production, large scale art installations, creative event production and collaborative writing projects. I'm also a bartender/ mixologist, I enjoy cocktail bars, live music and anything that has to do with hiking, camping and being outdoors.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

I'm currently traveling and I'm looking to meet new people! Couch surfing has been recommended to me by several friends and I'm looking forward to having my own experience. I've been traveling for a few months now and I've just landed in Melbourne about two weeks ago. I love it so much that I've decided to postpone my trip up the coast and stay here for a while! At this point I'm also looking for a place to stay for a week or so while I figure some things out.

Music, Movies, and Books

Some staples of my favorite music are Radiohead, Andrew Bird, Emancipator, Modest Mouse, Florence and the Machine and most anything with real instruments and an interesting beat. I will listen to and enjoy almost any music as long as its not really loud and angry, poorly produced to too "pop-y" and repetitive with shitty lyrics and a computerized voice.
I listen to jazz and classical almost everyday. I'm a sucker for live jazz.

As for books I tend to gravitate towards non-fiction, either science oriented or specialized books that I can learn something from. The last one I read was A Brief History of Time by Stephen Hawking... well I almost read it until I left it on an airplane and so I had to buy it again on audiobook, so I suppose I listened to it. Not sure if that's cheating.

As for films, a few that come to mind are What Drems May Come, Pan's Labyrinth, Inception, Lord of the Rings (because how could you not), Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Sin City and anything strange and slightly twisted that makes you think but is not a horror film or filled with gore. Action, Adventure, Fantasy, Drama and some comedies, but they have to be really well written.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

This year I went to Burning Man in the US for the first time with an honorarium sculpture. I was on a team of ten talented people, we raised 60k and went out to the desert a week before the festival to weld together our massive 25ft metal art installation of a tomb of a fictional beast. That was after I decided I wanted to change my life and I put my stuff in storage and left everything I knew to go on a journey of self discovery. I'm still on that journey. The sculpture might be more impressive though.

Teach, Learn, Share

I'm a screenwriter; if you are interested in learning the basics or have an idea for a film or tv series and have no clue where to start, I'm happy to teach you the basics about treatments, character and story development, writing a pitch, pilot or full length feature.

I'm also more then happy to trade board for cooking, cleaning, and any kind of administrative, organizational work or helping with out with other errands you might need to get done!

I've also taught many different dance disciplines (ballet, jazz, contemporary, modern, bellydance, fire spinning) I'm more then happy to work with you if dance is one of your interests.
