About Me

I feel to be a student of life above all else.

Got out of high school and started working on an independent film with 2 good fiends. Working odd jobs but live with family and film project is main focus atm (has been primary vehicle for my education). Has helped me realize I really care about asking questions and it's humbled me a good deal.

I believe life is beautiful and deserving of appreciation. Currently getting to know myself, learning what fills me with joy and makes me come alive. New to CouchSurfing and am stoked by the idea of it. My experience suggests people are consistently amazing in ways I couldn't possibly anticipate and I'm down to follow this. In the process of accepting creative responsibility for my life. Simultaneously trying to man up and get in touch my inner child.

I'm interested in what it means to be human and alive. What is universally human? What is unique to each of us.
Seems to me nobody really knows what's going on but we all have our own angles of experiencing this life stuff.

I think stories are magical. Learning to see the world through another lens, from a different angle (yours!) puts our own experience in greater context and awareness. The idea of of enriching each other's lives with fresh perspectives and building these kinds of connections around the world inspires me deeply.

I've heard it said that "there are no answers, only better questions" . It stuck.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

I hold it to be true that:
Different cultures and lifestyles are fascinating
The world needs people to come together seeking understanding and love
Everyone has something(s) to teach
Trust is key to a healthy society & it's important to build it.
You experience a place differently through someone else's world
CS is building wonderful community

And so it hits the nail on the head of something I consider to be awesome.

My experience w/ CS is has been very limited but powerful nonetheless. Since exploring the community a bit more, I've grown increasingly hyped such a forum exists.

Would be stoked to host as soon as I'm in a place more accommodating to it (currently living with the rents)

Music, Movies, and Books

Music:
Love wide array of music from different genres but have been really into singer-songwriters and folk artists these days
older ones, e.g. Rodriguez, Paul Simon, Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell...
and younger ones like Thorin Loeks, Jose Gonzalez, Shaky Graves, Ben Howard, Iron and Wine... I'm mega super especially digging the authentic jams of Jon and Roy atm.
Also, gotta throw them Nujabes beats on for cooking, cleaning or writing (occasional freestyling too)
In the last week or so the Blues have been getting me like nothing else and it's a world I'm eager to discover

Movies:
I could go on and on but will try and keep it simple.
Most moving non-fiction film I've seen recently - When Two Worlds Collide (think it's on Netflix)
Films that have been capturing my imagination - Recent experience watching movies is characterized by coming under the spell of Hayao Miyazaki's magical works with Studio Ghibli (Naausica of the Valley of the Wind, Princess Mononoke especially)

Books:
I'm stoked on reading. I'm d to talk books and am always open to new suggestions.
Currently reading - The Hero With a Thousand Faces by Joseph Campbell, Zen and the Art of Making a Living by Laurence Boldt, Directing the Documentary by Michael Rabiger

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Thinking back to interesting things I've done, 1 thing, hardly thought about in years until pondering this question, jumps out as "amazing" to me. Amazing as it required uncharacteristic confidence and vulnerability during a very insecure time for me.
*setting* It's the 8th grade. I'm about as grounded as a fresh helium balloon the toddler just let go of. I have some good friends but find my middle school's social climate harsh, hostile and confusing. Feel like my childhood has been prematurely ended as I rush into a perverted idea of what it means to grow up. Extremely self-conscious and concerned with other's judgements, regular bouts of anxiety. *wtf moment* Heard on the announcements that the school musical was going to be Greese. I thought "hey I remember watching that with my mom when I was a kid" so I auditioned , got one of he lead roles and had to sing + dance in front of the whole school (wasn't like I discovered some hidden talent for singing either) .

Teach, Learn, Share

What Can I Teach?
I can likely help you improve your kayak stroke and have pretty extensive experience with equipment-free strengthening programs focused on the lower body (learned through rehabbing my fair share of gnarly injuries). Also walk my mom through some basic yoga from time to time so if that's an interest I could be of some assistance. If you've always wanted to make a little home movie, but haven't known how to go about it, I may be of assistance. Last off the top of my head, I may be able to conjure up some good improv games :)

What am I trying to learn?
I'm happy to learn about whatever it is that makes someone passionate and feel alive. Hella down to try new things, especially when my skill level is real low. 2 things which I've had a deep interest in for a while but have never had the courage or "shittogetherenoughness" to nurture is truly learning another language and learning to play an instrument. Musical thing particularly intimidates me but I'm feeling ready to pursue it.

What can I share?
You can depend on me to maintain a positive attitude. I can promise to bring an open mind and a genuine curiosity in whatever makes you tick. I like to listen and have some stories which may well lead to laughter as well. Another thing I can promise is to be honest; if asked a sincere question, I'll answer as truthfully as I can. My mother raised me to considerate of others. I learned tidiness and flexibility elsewhere but all make a good combo for a surfer I think. Special note* I actually enjoy doing dishes!
Also, I make no claims at being a great or even good cook. But I consistently attempt to combine nutritious ingredients in a creative and palatable way. I'd be more than happy to do the same for you.
