To make the world a better place. More fair, more sustainable, more fun.
I'm currently doing a Filmmakers Without Borders Fellowship in Bhutan, teaching and making films. I've been travelling around the world the past 15 years, doing child protection, climate activism, journalism and filmmaking. But I think after this year I'll probably try to settle for a bit.
I think that knowledge equals freedom, there should be no borders (intellectual or physical) and we should all be thankful for what we have. Actually I've got these principles tattooed on my body in various languages. These principles guide and encourage me in most of my endeavours, to keep learning and sharing knowledge, to never believe that anything is impossible.
I think we need to take responsibility for the impact of our actions and always try to do the best we can with what we have.
Why I’m on Couchsurfing
HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING
Travelling and hosting, I love doing both.
I've stayed with couch hosts across Asia, Europe and the Americas, and had wonderful experiences everywhere I went. I am forever grateful to all the people who have shown hospitality to me and I really enjoy repaying the favour.
I first used couchsurfing while cycling across Asia and it was amazing meeting so many incredible people. Especially in Kunming, Yunnan Province, China, where I was welcomed into the community like I was part of the family. One of the best months of my life.
I've stayed with couch hosts across Europe and the Americas too, where I had more fantastic experiences with many great people.
I also hosted in Amsterdam, Uppsala and Melbourne, which I really enjoyed as I got to meet many wonderful people that way too. At the moment I'm living in Bhutan, and can hopefully host here too, although I do live in a school.
Film, art, writing, football, lazing about watching DVDs.
Travelling by bicycle, sharing knowledge and experiences, making the world a better place. Mainly through creative means.
- social work
Music, Movies, and Books
My favourite writers are Kundera, Abani, Saramago, Coelho and Gemmell. But I'm always up for reading something new. So long its not Dan Brown.
My favourite directors are Malick, Allen, Fincher, Mann, Jonze, Mereilles, Aronofsky, The Coens, Jean-Marc Vallee, the guy that directed Old Boy, ah, there are probably others. My favourite films are the Thin Red Line, Old Boy, Requiem, Cafe de Flore, ah, there are definitely others.
Music, I don't like any particular genre, but I'll always go back to Radiohead, Oasis, Massive Attack, Sigur Ros, and DJ Shadow.
One Amazing Thing I’ve Done
In 2008-09 I cycled from Australia to Denmark. I was able to experience the hospitality and generosity of people in places I knew nothing about, remote parts of the world where people have next to nothing but want to share it with you.
And this year I'm doing a Filmmaking Without Borders Fellowship in Bhutan, which is pretty amazing too.
Teach, Learn, Share
I can teach about travelling by bicycle, fixing bicycles, making films, doing social work, writing, drawing and trying to change the world. Of course I still need to learn a lot more about all these things, and want to learn about everything else!
What I Can Share with Hosts
As above I can teach film, writing and fixing bikes. I can share lots of stories about travelling the world solo by bicycle and lots of my experiences working and campaigning in countries across the world. And stories about Bhutan too!
