About Me

CURRENT MISSION

Survive law school with my joie de vivre intact, find what I love so that I can work on a way to get paid to do it.

PHILOSOPHY

I am a stalwart optimist who believes as a matter of principle that "it all works out". I believe, all things being equal, that people really do like others and seek out human contact. That said, I'm not much of a city person and I'll trade the covenience of city living for the elbow room of the hills any day of the week.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

My main focus on CS right now is building the CSDC community through our biweekly pub gatherings and other events. I look forward to welcoming my first surfers, perhaps sometime this summer, and I am positively aching to hit the road again when I'm no longer poor and busy. Or perhaps simply less poor and less busy.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

I stumbled into couchsurfing before I heard about CS.com. The summer before lawschool my brother and I went to Europe and, through various happy coincidence, found wonderful people to stay with in two different countries. It was by far the best part of the trip, and this has convinced me that I'm *done* with hostels and hotels. Comme les francais disent: "Il y a moin bien, mais c'est plus cher"

Interests

I spend most of my non-school time fencing, hiking, and camping. As an unrepentant geek, I combine technology with them where possible, with lots of photography, and geocaching when I can.

I love cooking, even if most of my kitchen time these days is subsistence cooking. I like wine and learning about it, and I'm beginning to appreciate the subtleties of beer, too. (Life's too short to drink crap beer.)

As I said, I'm a geek of diverse interests. I'm a defunct gamer (no consoles or gaming boxes, so I haven't played in years) but I like computer games and computers generally. I'm also interested in FOS, data security, and internet policy, though that's closer to work than play.

Music, Movies, and Books

I love complex caper films, whodunnits, and espionage, but I will heckle if it gets absurd.

Teach, Learn, Share

I know:
Fencing (Foil, Sabre)
Archery
Fried rice (Not authentic, but really tasty)
French (Good enough to talk to anyone who wants to talk to me)
American Law (I'm paying a shitload of money to learn it, I better put it down as something I know.)

I'd love to learn:
Horse riding (Somehow never got the chance)
Sailing
Firearms (I prefer a bow, but as long as they're about I best know my way around them)
An Eastern language (I've got a chance at actually conversing in 2/3rds of the world, but I'm utterly adrift on that end of the globe)
