About Me

ABOUT ME

I have a low tolerance for crowds of tourists and a high tolerance for wandering aimlessly down streets of new towns/cities, and for people watching.

My dissertation research is about education and development in French West Africa, starting in 1945 and into the postcolonial period.

Why I’m on Couchsurfing

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

I have hosted a few people in France, attended some CS meetings, and I like to think that as a surfer myself I contribute something to my hosts.
I have also introduced some people to the CS site and its concept!

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

I have met some super cool people through couchsurfing.

Interests

I love languages, reading, music (playing and listening to it), world cinema, traveling, hiking, singing, reading, cooking, photography, history, and architecture. When I'm traveling I love to go to parks, cafes, museums, non-tourist areas, open air markets and crafts fairs, or hiking.

Music, Movies, and Books

Music: (jazz, classical, world, rock, and folk)
Indigo Girls, Patty Larkin, The Duhks, Dar Williams, Catie Curtis, Mana, Juanes, Habib Koite, The Beatles, The Shins, Dispatch, Eagles, Sondre Lerche, Simon and Garfunkel, Jason Mraz, Jack Johnson, etc etc.
Books: historical fiction, non fiction, anything that takes places in a different place and time from where I am. Just read The Hunger of Memory.
Movies: mostly foreign films and documentaries.

One Amazing Thing I’ve Done

Sometimes I am able to live in the moment, even when the past and the future seem so much bigger.

Sometimes I've been able to keep hoping and believing even when it seems impossible.

Oh, and to have my baby picture kissed by a rural Romanian woman while stranded in a train station trying to get to Hungary.

Teach, Learn, Share

I'd be happy to teach anyone a bit of English, Spanish, or French. I'm happy to teach some songs or help someone with a flute or piano piece, or teach someone a recipe from home. I'd love to learn other languages, learn the guitar, learn local recipes. I also firmly believe that a great conversation cannot be underestimated, and that how you listen is just as important as how you talk.

Countries I’ve Visited

Austria, Belgium, Bolivia, Canada, Chile, Czech Republic, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Monaco, Morocco, Netherlands, Norway, Peru, Poland, Portugal, Puerto Rico, Romania, Slovakia, Spain, Switzerland, Turkey, United Kingdom, Uruguay, Vatican City State
