Hi! I’m Rameesh Paul, a researcher and PhD student from India with a love for thoughtful conversations, good food, and discovering how people live in different corners of the world. I spend most of my time working on theoretical computer science problem (yep, I’m the guy with a notebook full of maths) and outside of that I watch lot of sports, movies, try my hand at cooking, and find fun ways to stay active like training in Bollywood dance.

I love connecting with people from different walks of life and believe that experiencing a place through the eyes of a local makes travel far more meaningful. My training in mathematics sometimes gives me this strange but comforting belief in a kind of underlying uniformity among people, that beneath all the cultural and personal differences, we often share the same core feelings and hopes. Couchsurfing feels like the perfect place to explore that idea in real life. I also enjoy deep, meandering conversations about life, philosophy, or just what makes people tick.

I listen to all sorts of music, Punjabi and Indian music are my go-to, especially Sufi and indie tracks. I’m drawn to songs with a melancholic feel, but I also enjoy upbeat pop and good-vibe songs. On some days, it’s 90s hip-hop and rap (Dre, Ice Cube, Nas, Tupac et. al.), and on others it’s The Beatles. I don’t follow genres too strictly; I just listen to whatever moves me.

When it comes to films, I gravitate toward festival-style cinema, movies that are emotionally rich, thought-provoking, and layered. Some recent favorites include the Cantonese film "All Shall Be Well", Mahdi Fleifel’s "To A Land Unknown", the Persian political thriller "Seed of a Sacred Fig", and our own "All We Imagine As Light". But the one film that has stayed with me the most is the Argentine gem "El Secreto de Sus Ojos", my all-time favorite.

I also love quieter, more reflective films like Ritesh Batra’s "The Lunchbox" and "The Photograph". They capture emotion in such understated and human ways. And then there are the more philosophical, mind-stretching ones like "The Ship of Theseus", that make you think deeply about you and relation to world around you.

我做过的一件不可思议的事情

The thing I’m most proud of (which I understand may come across as very simplistic or silly)is my relationship with my wife. During a year, when we were dating and when we lived in different cities, I balanced a full-time job, long train rides every other week just to see her, and studied for a tough entrance exam (in a subject I had no formal background in!)—all to get into a top university where she was studying. It was exhausting and uncertain, but also incredibly motivating. That year changed and shaped my life.

I can teach you a few Bollywood dance moves (yes, even if you think you have two left feet!), cook simple Indian dishes, or help with any tech-related questions, or help see how to apply Mathematics to daily life. I also enjoy discussing culture, politics, language, and everyday life.

I can share good conversation, a few stories, and my love for music and cinema especially if you’re into Indian films or the kind of world cinema that shows up at festivals. I’d be happy to teach you a few Bollywood dance moves or share some songs you might not have come across before. I'm also always up for deep, meandering conversations about life, its meaning, and our connection to it all.

As a guest, I’m clean, respectful, and easygoing. I don’t need much, just a place to sleep and a little of your time if you’re open to it. In return, I’ll bring warmth, curiosity, and hopefully a few good laughs into your home.
