ABOUT ME

I've got a need for adventure in this Lifetime, and i'm famous for "making the best of any situation." I've slept in bug-infested jungles, on rocky ground in the Andes, in one-quarter star hostels, on open-air beaches... with nary a complaint. I fancy the Burning Man Festival and have done six tours there... i've been a Black Rock Ranger for many years and in 2009 i spent 22 days in the desert helping to build the Temple. I enjoy art, music and community, meeting new people and seeing new sights.

PHILOSOPHY

"Every day above-ground is a good one!" and "Strangers are friends, waiting to be met!" might sum up my personal philosophy at any given moment.

HOW I PARTICIPATE IN COUCHSURFING

My present housing situation only allows a free couch some of the time... but i'm always free to entertain surfers who happen thru my town of Austin, Texas. I am an avid traveler and look forward to adding my spice to the soups of other locales.

COUCHSURFING EXPERIENCE

Ten years ago i made a couchsurfing trip to NYC for three days and three nights, with only a backpack and a list of contacts i'd made thru spending time on an internet mailing list. Needless to say, this was the best of trips while being the worst of trips... i am excited to explore the NEW! World of Couchsurfing, with actual pics of couches and vouching for trustworthy folks and etc. A Brave New World, indeed! =D

Classic rock, 80's/New Wave, well-produced EDM, classical. You name it, i probably enjoy it depending on my mood and time of day. Not too keen on gangsta' rap or modern country. I really dig 'live' music- recent concerts include The Presets, Ladytron, NIN/Jane's Addiction, Airborne Toxic Event and Thievery Corporation. Skinny Puppy is next, in December.

我做过的一件不可思议的事情

Lessee... I've managed to get myself formally 'adopted' into the Shipibo tribe, an indigenous group of approximately 30,000 living in the Peruvian Amazon - in November 2007. I spend about a month a year with my jungle 'family' where i function as a fisherman and work to set up sustainable agriculture projects while studying shamanism.

In 5th grade, i was the #2 kid on a 5-person team which won the North Carolina State Championship in chess. That year, i was ranked in the top-10 in my age group in the US and at one point got to play an exhibition match against Bobby Fischer. That was 1984. ;)

In 2004 i went to Peru for the first time, and got kidnapped from the airport along with a gringo named Mike whom i had just met. I managed to get us *and our bags* safely delivered to our hotel... which is a feat i still find amazing. (yes, we paid our own ransom!)

I'm a novice at cooking but a big fan of food... and want to learn this fabulous skill!
